Hi I am going to Europe in a couple weeks. I have a Canon PowerShot A430 4 Mega Pixels, I want to set up the best settings for my camera, so my pictures can turn out well. Can someone explain to me what
L,M1,M2, and S mean?
Also what does: Superfine, fine and normal mean?

Thanks!

I am assuming one is file size Large, Medium1, Medium2 and small

And again assuming the other is resolution, Superfine being the highest.

But tell us what part of the menu those abbreviations appear in and I am sure somebody can tell you for sure.

Those refer to the image size and quality. L is large (2272x1704 pixels) M1 and M2 are medium1 and 2 (1600X1200 and 1024X768 respectively) and S is small (640X480). These refer to the size of the picture that will be produced. The bigger it is, the more space it will take on your memory card, but usually the better it will look. Superfine, Fine and Normal are subsets of these categories and refer to the compression of the image. Normal will be normal, fine will be a bit better and superfine is the highest (best) setting. I used to use my S2 IS on L-Superfine. The largest file with the best detail. This was because I knew I was going to re-size it, but wanted the original to be the largest best possible image. Be sure to have many GB's of memory cards though unless you can download them as you go.

By the way, I would suggest that you take a copy of your camera's manual with you on your trip. If you are travelling far, you can learn alot from having that time to sit and play with the camera while reading the manual. That was how I learned alot abou tmy S2 IS on our 6 hr flight to California a couple years ago. If you don't have a copy of your manual, they can be downloaded at the Canon website. That is how I got the info for your camera. The site for the download is here:

Just make sure you take the right manual with you. I bought a new camera right before our last trip and packed the manual in my carryon. Only problem, it was the Spanish manual!!! I guess that's what happens when you pack late at night!
