"Camera": Stupid name or not?

I feel for the poor girl. Hopefully she will get a nickname or has a middle name that she can use.

I have an Uncle whose middle name is "Five"; yup, 5. He was the 5th kid and I guess Grandma had had enough of naming babies by then! At least his first name is normal, and he uses "V" for his middle initial.

It would be a bad name if it were Camera pronounced the normal way. To give someone that word for a name and then change the pronunciation of it is just ridiculous. They could have at least changed it to Camara (which would still be bad), or Camerra (which isn't really a bad name at all and is easily pronouncable).

I've worked in the schools for years, and if a student came in with the name "Camera" and pronounced it "Camerra", I'd immediately think the parents were uneducated and didn't know how to spell when they named her at the hospital . Just like when a parent names their child something like Chassity or other seemingly misspelled words.

Of course, this is coming from someone who has a great great great uncle named Quadik; as a sidebar, he was killed when he was squished by a falling rock in a quarry during a rendezvous with his girlfriend. But that's neither here nor there.

Love the way it's pronounced, but dislike the way it's spelled. Wish they would have spelled it as pronounced, then it would be very pretty.

ETA: I was channel surfing the other day and stopped on Maury for a second (I know, I know, pathetic). There was a woman named Forever and her daughter's name was Eternity. I hope and pray these were fake names for the show's sake.

Name your child whatever you like, it's between you and them. If your child has an oddly spelled or pronounced name, you as a parent need to prepare them for what they may face in school and in life.

The spelling is going to cause some problems with the way people pronounce it.

There are tons of teacher stories about kids' names and unique spellings. One teacher I know had a student named Fe'male (rhymes with tamale).

There are a lot of Asian and Middle Eastern families in our town, so a lot of unusual names, but none I can think of that mean something in English like Camera does. You said she has a difficult to pronounce last name- could Camera be a more common name in some other culture? If so at least there's a decent explanation!

But I have to agree, in this country- that name is going to cause problems for the poor kid!

But it could be worse- my fave celebrity child name is Penn Gillette's daughter, Moxie Crimefighter Gillette.

No one is saying she shouldn't be allowed to choose her own child's name. We're just giving our opinions on the name.

I also think it's a stupid name, at least spelled that way. Give it a more phonetic spelling that's not already used by another word, and it'd be OK.

Sinderella....oh boy, she just has the path to a career in pole dancing mapped out for her, doesn't she?


Here's a tip to think about when naming your kid:

Say:

"And now the next President of the United States: (name)!"

If the name sounds awkward in that sentence, perhaps its a bad idea.

This is why I named my kids Lily and Anna. Easy simple spellings. I knew I could spell it with out thinking about it and when they got to preschool they could too (with out having to use 2 pieces of paper. )

Not that I am uneducated, I just can't spell. I hope they got their dad's genes in this mater. (at least they have my looks! )

I won't judge the parents making an unusual choice of name and pronunciation, UNLESS they get indignant and frustrated when people mispronounce it. They can't expect people to read their minds.

My wife is a pediatrician, so she meets new babies every day. One day a few years ago she walked into a mom's hospital room and asked her how 1-day-old James was doing. The Mom started screaming at my wife and calling her racist for misprouncing her new son's name. My wife pronounced "James" in the traditional way that you are now as you're reading this. The new Mom shouted at my wife that her baby's name was pronounced "jah-MEZ" and that my wife was a stupid bigot for mispronouncing it.

Yeh, so that Mom was out of line. But as to the OP's friends, as long as they're OK with the initial mispronunciations, and they are OK with their daughter putting up with it her whole life, then that's okie-dokey by me. Seems reminiscent of Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue."
