Camera strap

I was curious what people use for their camera strap on their DSLR cameras.

I have been using the neck strap that came with my Canon but have been searching for something better.

I am thinking of buying a Black Rapid RS4 that will allow me to have the camera by my hip rather than constantly bouncing around in front of me on the neck strap. Has anyone here ever used one of these straps? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've never used one of those straps. I use a hand strap, it's more comfortable than the neck strap.

I have the "4" and use it all the time. Because I always have a battery grip and usually a 2.8 (= heavy) lens, the standard strap was killing my neck. Now I don't even notice the weight. It does take a little getting used to the idea that your camera is hanging upside down, but now it feels natural. I have it set so my hand falls right on the camera. Since it uses the the tripod hole for the connection, that can be an issue. I came up with a workaround that works for me. I put a split ring on the normal connection and hook the strap on that while on the tripod. I have several workaround combinations depending on which lens I am using.

I have an RS-7 on my 60D that I bought more out of curiosity at first, than anything else, based on some threads here. Let me tell you this. If you ever use one of these, you'll likely never want to use anything else ever again, IMO.

It's certainly different strokes for different folks, but I bought a Crumpler Industry Disgrace too. I tried both at WDW back in April at WDW. The RS-7 won hands-down IMHO and the Disgrace is now on my T2i (backup body). I would love the Industry Disgrace... had I never used the RS-7. There's no comparison between the Disgrace and a "regular strap" but now that I've had a shoulder sling, I never want the bump and bang of a neck strap of any kind ever again.

Crumpler Industry Disgrace. I love this strap. It distributes the weight well, breathes good when it's hot and doesn't slip around. I can wear it around my neck or across my body.

I'm using the Black Rapid RS- Sport Extreme. So far I love it.

I use with my D700 and the 70-200mm VR II, and it does a great job of evenly distributing the weight. I will see how it handles the rigors of WDW during our trip next month.

Once you find the perfect length that works, you'll never, ever consider anything else -- your camera is always right there when you need and yet stays out of your way when you don't, all while putting no pressure on your shoulder.

I have been reading over some of the other threads and now have one kind of side question on the whole camera carrying question.

How do you prefer to carry your camera in the parks in general? Dou you use a strap a camera bag or both? Would my camera be better off in a small bag, ie more protected from sudden rain? Or is it better to carry a plastic back and put the camera in it if it rains?

Sorry for all the questions. I just seem to not take my DSLR sometimes because it is a pain to carry around (with just neck strap that came with camera) and I really want to take it on this trip as it takes such better pictures than the point and shoot does. Plus I am really starting to learn so much more about how to use it on the settings other than AUTO.

I am leaning toward the Black Rapid RS 4 or 7 strap and just having a plastic bag with me in case it rains. Even though that strap is actually more expensive than a small basic camera bag.

I'm not too fond of the BlackRapid attachment style, so I prefer the nice neoprene neckstraps that have long leads so it can be used cross-chest, neck, or shoulder style. I have been a very big fan of Kata Reflex-E straps and used them for years now. Extremely comfortable, adjustable, sweat-wicking, strong, and with storage pockets.

I generally carry my camera by the strap - either around my neck with smaller, lighter lenses, or by hand with the neck-strap coiled twice around my wrist for safety. If I bring a bag, it's generally just for the extra lenses and the camera still rides outside the bag, unless the weather turns and I need to hide it. If I'm not traveling with a bag in the parks on a particular day, I've got a ziplock bag in my pocket for emergency cover.

I keep the camera out pretty much all the time wherever I go. When I carry a bag it's usually full of lenses and there's no room for the body anyway. I keep a Lenscoat Bodybag on my camera and then have a plastic bag to put everything in when it rains. And if you ever get caught without a plastic bag, you can get the clear ones free at many of the shops in the parks.

I will have my camera out the majority of the time, but I will have my Lowepro SlingShot 302 AW (all weather) with me to carry additional lens and to store my camera when I'm on the rides. I also have the OP/TECH USA 9001142 Rainsleeve (comes two per pack) to cover my camera in case of a sudden rain storms. A friend gave me a couple of these rain sleeves to try...he says they are pretty good.

I carry my camera out and my Lowepro Fastpack 200 backpack with my accessories (lenses, etc.). I have a dry bag in my backpack for rain.

I bought a Black Rapids a number of years ago after using a few different straps. I love my Black Rapids. Works great for me.

As for traveling around in the parks, I never bring a camera bag. I carry my camera with the Black Rapids and also have 1 or 2 lens pouches that attach to my belt depending on which park I'm going to that day. I also will carry another lens in my pocket (usually a 50mm f/1.8 or 30mm f/1.4). I wear cargo shorts and either of those lenses fit perfectly without much issue.

So at any given time I could have 4 lenses with me and no bag. I'll keep an extra battery and extra CF card in my pocket as well.

Thats what works for me.

Another vote for Black Rapid (RS-7) strap. I really like it. It helps a lot that my camera is at my side while I'm carrying my son or daughter. I was even thinking of picking up the RS-Sport.

This thread helped me with my desicion.

Of course now I am leaning more toward the RS 7 when before I was pretty sure I was going to go RS 4.

Although being left handed I am not sure how that would work with the curved strap.

The only reason I went with the RS-4 over the 7 was the thought that I was planning, on occasion, converting it to carry two cameras. That can't be done with the 7 (according to BR).
