It will be my first time flying in September. I plan on taking my digital camera and ipod in my carryon bag. Please don't laugh, because I honestly don't know.....but will the x-ray machine hurt either of these electronic devices?

No will not hurt them at all. We just returned from WDW on July 22nd and had both of those items in our carry-ons as well.

I was traveling almost weekly for many months. I had my digital camera with me for all of them and had no problems.

The X-Ray would only have an effect on chemical film (ie:the rarely used 35mm film etc). Folk who still use this film hand the film to the handler and it goes around the X-Ray.

Hey! Who are you calling 'rarely-used'? :teeth:
I love my 35MM camera (except the part about not being able to see the "no-flash" option in the dark, when I'm trying to take pictures inside Disney attractions ;))
For anybody still using the old-fashioned method of photography:
- Airport security xray machines are not hazardous to exposed (used) film or slower-speed (100, 200 and 400 ISO) unexposed film, although if you bring it through numerous xray machines, yes, there is a cumulative risk.
- For higher-speed films (800 ISO and above), request hand inspection of your film. Plan ahead. Depending how busy your airport is, it may take a few to ten minutes for a qualified inspector to get there. When that person arrives, I always offer to take a picture so they can see it's really a working camera :) Oh, and um, don't make the mistake that someone I know REALLY  did - wait for the film!!! Yes, I once walked off without it, and didn't realize that until the plane had taken off.

Your question has been answered, but I just wanted to say...Have a great first flight. I hope you have a window seat. :thumbsup2

Many :goodvibes on your first flight! It's really exciting and fun. My tip: Go to the b-room before you get on the plane. You don't to be "that guy/gal" who has to climb over everyone and make them get up and down...
