I need help...My son wants a camera for Christmas..a Nikon or Canon...One with a lens...He wants a nice one...I do not want to spend more than 500... Camera experts...Please Help!

If you're looking for a great point and shoot style camera, I have always loved Canon Powershots. The pictures and video come out great and they are super portable due to their size. I have never had any issues with them breaking or getting damaged either. You really cannot go wrong with this camera.

I prefer Canon cameras myself. From what you said about a lens - I assume he wants a SLR camera - where you can change out lenses?
For an entry level SLR camera I would look at the Canon Rebel line.
I think you can get a package deal for a good price at Sam's Club.

Does your son want a detachable lens system?

If he wants a DSLR, I would look at the T3 with lens on Canon's Factory refurb site and others. Your "benchmark" for middle ground is around $500 for this camera with Lens kit.

If he would like a mirror-less camera, I would recommend the Sony NEX-5

I am a "Canon man" myself. But, I also know a couple of folks that have a camera from the mirror-less Sony line and love them.

This was awesome info! My wife is looking for a better camera as well and wants to spend less than $500!

She isn't crazy about the heft of the Canon and Nikon SLRs, but she loves the "rapid fire" speed she can take pictures at with them! When we were at the store doing research on them we also fell in love with the Samsung NX200, which is similar to the Sony mirrorless camera, but much more expensive!

Canon and Nikon aren't the only cameras in the world that are good. Especially for entry level, no aspirations to become a pro, etc. If that is not the case then Sony and Pentax have some great cameras, too. In fact, many features on the entry level Pentax are superior to entry level Canons.

Bottom line is find one that works for you and your needs. They are all different sizes and weights, too. You might find one too bulky or another too small if you have large hands.

I just bought the Nikon D5100.

This is at a bit higher price point and I'm still learning, but so far I'm happy with it.

I got the D3100 but I've recently been lusting after the 5100. If only it were made by Apple. ;)

I started with Cannon in the 80's and switched to Nikon in the 90s. I am still using lenses I bought for my Nikon film SLRs on my new DSLRs. I

Regardless of DLSR brand spend a decent amount of money on the lens. If your son wants to learn about photography get a 50mm or 35mm lens. Even the pro level lenses can be affordable if you buy one of these lenses. DSLR's are computers to which lenses are attached. Lenses hold value for a very long time. DLSRs not so much.

The vast majority of my WDW photos are with a 24mm or 50mm lens.

If there is a good camera store near you, check out their used cameras. It is a good way to start in photography on the cheaper side.

Later,
Dan
