just wondered if it is safe practice to buy battery "compatible" with my camera or do you recommend name brand battery that matches my camera type. Don't want to screw anything up with my camera by using an off brand.

I have batteries for multiple cameras from an eBay seller "orphanbiker". He has about 55000 positive feedback vs 18 total negative. I've had no problems at all with the batteries, and I wouldn't even think of paying manufacturer prices again.

Some are fine, others aren't. Just like everything else on ebay. The safest thing is to go by references. Browse the photography boards and find out what other people are buying and are happy with. Thats how I found out about www.sterlingtek.com. Two canon boards I go to a lot recommend them so I got one and it works like a charm and sooo cheap too.

We got cheap eBay batteries for my wife's old Canon SD600 and her current Fuji F40. No problems so far and they seem to hold as much or more charge than the OEM one. I plan on doing the same when if/when I move to a DSLR that requires a proprietary battery.

I second sterlingtek. For little more than the cost of one canon battery I got two and an ac/dc charger. Going on two years of use and as good or better than the OEM batt. And the dc charger is real nice when on the road.

Some batteries are good, some not so good. Even OEM batteries can have problems, as seen by the Sony laptop battery fires.

Since there is no guarantee that any of the batteries are perfect I would try to stay with a company that will at least notify it's customers if any bad batches of batteries are detected. The OEMs may be better about that than the aftermarket suppliers.

Hit and Miss. I've bought some that worked fine, but for the most part they work great early and die quickly. The just don't have the lifespan of the OEM batteries. I did however find great batteries at Batteries Plus (check local listings) for half of the OEM price. They stand behind them and will also replace/repair any that have gone dead.

I have purchased many from "orphanbiker" and everyone has performed great. Can't speak for any others though.

just wondered if it is safe practice to buy battery "compatible" with my camera.... .

Btw, the funniest (and most true) definition of "compatible" I have read was regarding a pack of inkjet paper, where compatible only means your printer won't burst into flames when the paper is inserted. ;)

Sterlingtek here also. I bought 2 batteries for my Canon HV20 vid camera, 2 chargers for the same and another charger for my Dig rebel. So far they are working just as they are supposed to.. I got the chargers so that when I kill all my batteries during the day at WDW I can just plug them all in and charge at once, and not have to switch.

There was a numbering issue on one of the boxes, what it said and what I ordered wasnt the same, but the battery itself seemed to be the power I ordered.

I have done this in the past and it worked out fine! Saved quite a bit of money even with shipping.
