I keep coming back to this inexpensive Canon backpack that I really like

I have that too - I use it to store my equipment at home (I don't get a dedicated space and don't have a huge amount of equipment...) Extremely reasonably priced, versatile, roomy...

I've tried a few bags and I just bought this Crumpler backpack a couple of months ago and used it on our recent trip to France to also carry my laptop, but I don't like it: http://www.adorama.com/CLCUBBROA.html.

The one thing I don't like about it is that it screams "camera bag."

I have this bag too, I really like it and it was my bag of choice for several years. Then last fall I decided I wanted a bag that would hold my laptop as well, so I got a Kata bag. I still use this bag to store my "backup" XT and anytime I want to carry a tripod. The straps on the bottom are great for holding a small tripod.

For the price compared to other "camera" backpacks, this one can't be beat. I'd still use it if it weren't for the laptop.

No belt-pack on mine, but it does have the "patented Lens Bridge system" and "Pop-Off film pocket!" :) Mine is the model 603, FWIW. It looks like they actually still make it, too; there have been some minor updates but by and large, the same bag.

I have that exact bag also! It must have been a big seller. It served me well but I bought a slingbag that I really like so the model 603's main purpose these days is for storage. It is surprising what it can hold - it really doesn't seem like a large bag. I don't think mine has quite the wear yours does but it's pretty close and was well travelled.

This just got me thinking maybe I should unretire it and have it ready for my general carrying when I grab my camera for the car.
Hmmmmmm........

I would suggest getting Scott Kelby's "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers".

Sorry to hop in on this thread but if I buy lightroom does it need to be used with photoshop or can it be used on its own? Also can I convert multiple RAW files in one go? Thanks

No, you don't need Photoshop unless there's something fancy you want to do. And yes you can convert a bunch of RAW files at once. You can set it up to apply "basic" edits on import then go through and tweak. You can also edit one picture in a group and then apply it to all the pictures that have have the same conditions, then zip through and tweak here and there. Once you get a system down it moves pretty quick. I did a batch the other day in about twenty minutes, one at a time would have taken me hours.

if you have editing software other than adobe you can add it and it will open there as well ie i have elements( adobe) and painter x( corel) as editing options

what i really need to do is stop being so lazy and actually read the help section and watch the rest of the tutorials

Seems like I saw that Canon backpack at Best Buy tonight!

I am in the process of planning to buy a Canon XSI (I think!) - and trying to plan what bag I will need. I am enjoying the thread!

I like that blue/purple Crumpler 6mil bag - but my husband carries the camera sometimes and I don't think he'd like that...he's pretty open minded - but I think he would want a more neutral bag.

Should you decide on the Canon bag, don't get it from Best Buy. I think the bag is around $80 from Best Buy, but Adorama sells it for about $50.

What kind of camera do you have? Small p&s or dslr w/ extra lenses?

FWIW, I always went the other way 'round and crammed the diapers, etc. in the camera bag. I prefer a backpack--this is what I carry now, though my kids were out of diapers when I got it (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/561682-REG/Kata_KT_DR_465_BR_DR_465_Digital_Rucksack_Black.html)--plenty of room for camera gear in the bottom compartment and kid gear in the top.

You could always use the diapers for extra padding should you choose to use a diaper bag. :thumbsup2

You could always put the Crumpler 4 mil home _in_ the diaper bag! :confused3

Seriously, I've thought about doing this so that I don't have a bag that screams "spendy photo equipment inside". My lenses have LowePro lens cases, and are easy to toss into any old backpack or bag. The body could stay around the neck, or in some padded compartment.

Regards,

Boris

the thing i always wondered about putting my camera in a diaper bag was the lint from the diapers/clothes/blankets etc getting on the camera stuff. ( not to mention any accidental leaks) putting it a bag in the bag might help

I received this from my brother who never uses his Rebel Film Camera when I bought my Xti. I have only two lenses the 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS. I figure I can carry my daughters Sony point and shoot in there as well. I would like to carry my compact sony camcorder in there too. We'll have to see. We are traveling to Disneyland and Yosemite this Summer.

I use a combination of the above.

For carting my gear to my destination, I use the Canon backpack shown above. I bought it at Amazon.

My gear consists of Rebel XT, 50mm 1.8, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 4IS L, 10-22, 430 EX II flash, cables, cards, etc. I leave the lens hoods home. If the tripod gets taken, it is put in a check through bag.

For going around the parks, I use the toploader on a belt. I decide ahead of time for the day which one other lens I want to use, and that gets put in a Lowepro lens case (it could go on the belt, but I just toss it into our park touring bag). I have to push my wife's wheelchair around in the park, and I found over the years that a shoulder bag (like my Crumpler 4 Mil home) swings around too much. I also found that keeping the camera around my neck tends to swing the camera around too much. The toploader on a belt works great. What I really like is that the zippers open to the outside, so the flap goes away from you. That make camera access greatly simplified. I just unzip, grab and shoot.

I can keep a card and a remote release and lightweight travel tripod in the TL pockets. If I let my shirt hang over the belt a bit, I don't even look so nerdy that my teenagers are any more embarrassed to be seen with me than normal.

Regards,

Boris

I have a Nikon D60 with the 18-200 VR lens and SB600. I'll be getting the 35mm soon too. ;) My kids are older, so the diaper bag would strictly be used for the camera equipment! Like Boris, I just like the idea of having a bag that doesn't scream "camera stuff, steal me!" Plus, there are some way cuter diaper bags than camera bags. I figure there's more room in a diaper bag to store other essentials so I wouldn't have to carry a separate purse.

Sorry about my failed promise - we had a death in the family and I haven't gotten around to taking the picture. This is the one I use: http://www.ju-ju-be.com/besmall_inside.html It's 12x19x4 - so very small for a diaper bag (they DO make larger ones.) I don't use it for a diaper bag and a camera bag - just camera. Totally eliminated the need to carry a purse at the same time.

It's a bit late now, I'll try to get you a pic tomorrow..
