I am looking to buy a new digital camera. Want something easy to use, nothing too fancy, that takes great pictures.

Anyone have one they really like they can recommend?

I LOVE my Canon Powershot A590. Very easy to use, has settings for fireworks, aquarium, and much more. Have used it for over 2 years now and never disappointed with the pictures!

Hope that helps!

I've had a Canon Powershot A460 for 1 1/2 years. I love it. It does everything - fireworks, portrait, snow, etc. It takes great pictures, and it's under $100! :cool1:

I give another thumbs up for the Canon. We have owned several different models over the years. They take nice pictures and have a good feature set. Most models take standard batteries as well.

How long is the delay? I've been considering a digital SLR because of lag time.

This is the one I have

I love it because it's so easy to use. It has a ton of different settings so you can get a right picture in different lighting. It has a 'kids' setting that I love...it take pictures while moving. I have some great shots from the Kilamajaro Safari with that setting!

It does have a slight delay when taking pictures for the flash, but now that I'm used to it, I compensate and I get all the shots I want.

It's not too fancy, but it certainly gets the job done. I think it's a great camera for the price.

The biggest thing I lok for is does it take batteries or charge? To me it is not worth the money to have to buy batteries all the time.

I've had several versions of the Kodak Easyshare and love them all! Some of the newer versions come with the chargeable battery which is another feature that I really like.

Oh about the batteries. My camera takes regular batteries, but they do seem to last a long time. I just bought a 4 pack of Kodak rechargeable batteries and I just switch them out and charge the set I'm not using so I always have batteries available. I think I got the set of 4 in the charger for about $14.

Someone has to step in for the Nikon guys! I have a Nikon Coolpix P80 and they just came out with a P90 with a better zoom. If you look in my Signature I have a link to my trip report. Unfortunately I ran out of bandwidth for the month for the fist 2/3 of it so if you go to page 24 I set up a new account and you can see what the pictures look like. (The fist 23 pages should be working in the next day or so)
The P80 you can get pretty reasonable on Ebay but the P90 took its place in the stores. I really do enjoy that camera (I took over 9000 pictures on our last 10 day vacation to WDW.) It doesn't fit in your pocket but the pictures are great even on auto. It does have many of the functions that a DSLR has but you don't get to swap out lenses.

On a side note, if you think you may want to get a little serious about taking pictures, it may be a good idea to look into an entry level DSLR, especially if you want to do a lot of low light pictures without them coming out grainy looking.

My newest toy is the Nikon D5000 and so far it's been so much fun figuring it all out!:thumbsup2

I'll step in for Nikon as well. The D5000 and, if money is an issue, the D40 are great entry level DSLRs. Just be aware that many lenses will be manual focus-only with these cameras, so if you plan on growing a huge lens catalog, you may want to look elsewhere. Right now, I think the best value-for-money in the DSLR department is in the D40. So again, if money is an issue, take a serious look at it. You can get one with a kit lens for ~$350.

While I recognize the D40 is a good starter SLR, I do think its getting a bit long in the tooth. It's to the point where, in my opinion the better values are the D5000, XS or XSi. The choice between those comes down to which the person likes the feel of more and which lens lineup they like better.

Oh, I agree completely. That's why I said 'if money is an issue'. So often, people come here saying they'd like a DSLR, but don't have the money for it. You can get a D40 w/ lens for $335. The D5000 is going to cost double that. I'm not sure of the prices on the XS or XSI, but I am quite positive they are more than $335.

To those people I might recommend looking into refurbished cameras. You can get a XS refurbished by Canon for $390ish with lens, XSi for $480ish, and 40D for $630(body only). All are impressive prices for a SLR camera.

Nikon D90 can be had for $730ish. Obviously not a lot of D5000's out there refurbished yet but deals can still be had.

and to anyone that's looking for a DSLR, and who knows...maybe the OP will want one, go and play with them at Best Buy. Make sure they are "for you". Also make sure they fit your hand nicely and are intuitive for you. ALL SLRs are capable of taking such good pictures that nitpicking that one is vastly better than another is probably shortsighted.

Enjoy the camera hunt OP, it's half the fun! ;)

I know a lot of people are quick to jump on the "get an entry level dSLR!" wagon, but it may not be for everyone.

My mom said almost the exact same thing as the OP did to me recently on looking for a camera for our upcoming trip. I'm all about the dSLR but I know it just isn't for her. She wanted something compact, that takes great pictures and is relatively simple to use.

I told her to get the Canon Powershot SD960IS. I have the SD800 and love it as a quick little point and shoot- it takes great pictures and fits in your pocket.

I also have a Canon XSi, four lenses, a flash and a myriad of other "toys" to go with it, and I'll be carrying my 5MDH at Disney all 9 days... I wouldn't recommend that for everyone though!

To those that are recommending the Nikon line---are they "quick" to take pics or slowww lag time and can you be specific on which Nikon's to look at ? Thanks

Keep in mind the more light you have the faster the camera can grab a nice picture. I have a Nikon P80 but the P90 is the newer one. I never had a problem with lag but if I needed to be split second accurate, I used the sports setting and grabbed 30 pictures in 2.5 seconds. That way I knew what I wanted was in there.

I have to get my vote in for a Canon. I love how small it is and DH can carry it in his pocket. It also takes good pix.
