I am interested in purchasing a new camcorder before our next visit to WDW in Sept 06. I already have one but it is too big & outdated - 9 years old. I like the smaller more compact ones they have out now. I am also interested in one that records on a disk. I don't really want one that takes pictures or hooks up to a computer, etc.. I would appreciate any recommondations you have. Thank you very much!!

I wonder if the photography board would be of any help, too! I'd post on both boards. :)

I'd like to know about this too. I am curious about whether it is better to get one that is a digital one that you have to download through the computer (too much technical stuff for me) or the ones with the DVD in them (more expensive). Any info would be great ... I feel like I'm missing out on some "moments" in my kids lives as I hate the one we have with the tape in it. Too cumbersome for my liking ;)

In my opinion, mini DV is the way to go. I videotape a lot of sports and love the mini DV format. The one we have is a Sony and it has lasted several years and taken the abuse well. It's making noises now that make me think it might be running out of useful time. :confused3 :rotfl:

We'll be buying another Sony mini-DV. The reviews I have read on the mini DVD and DVD recorders are not positive.

Good luck!

I agree completely. While it sounds neat to be able to record directly onto disc, it is just bad technology for two reasons. First, as remarkable as it may seem, properly stored magnetic tape is rated to last longer than optically stored data on DVD. Second, no one ever records video that cannot be improved by editing.

Both Canon and Sony make excellent miniDV camcorders. I highly recommend them.

ITA! We just got a Canon miniDV (Elura100) and I love it! The idea of a dvd camcorder does sound great, but it really is not. The salespeople at each store I went to did not recommend them. It is easy enough to make a DVD from a miniDV anyway. I will save the tapes since they do last longer.
