we always recorded ON the rides when i used to go. its now been about 10 years. i still see fresh vids on you tube but had read someone say that any loose items were not permitted on rides. but i dont remember ever being told not to take my camera on the ride with us before years back. can you still record on the rides? thanks:d

You're not supposed to, they tell you not to, but people do it all the time. I have to admit that it drives me crazy and I wish they were able to enforce the rule. It can sure ruin someone else's enjoyment of the ride!!!!!

you know i said camcorders, not cameras right? i just ask because while cameras annoy me because of the noise, i dont possibly see how a camcorder could bother ANYONE, seeing as how it makes no noise and is always right infront of the face of the person using it. why would it bother you? i just personally treasure those videos from the DL rides from vacation. i have some from SEVERAL years ago and adore them. i love memories though, im big on that.

I do hate the flashes from cameras on dark rides like POTC.
I have recorded with the camcorder on some rides like the teacups and even Splash. I just duck it under poncho before the bug SPLASH and dont take it back out until after the riverboat scene to avoid that last splash from the other logs. It doesn't work as well in dark rides as there is not enough light and as Dizme said, it is annoying to see the lights from the screen on many of the dark rides

Depending on the camcorder it can bother individuals, myself included. Th problem is any little flashing light that indicates it is recording or an LCD screen that can't be shut or closed like some small handheld type things have. Referring to dark rides, at least.

Have to disagree. I have asked the CM's and 99% of the time there is no problem. I tried to find the "rule" but have not been successful. Some rides there is "no flash photography."
BTMRR is great to use a camcorder on alond with screamin.

I took my new camcorder on Screaming in DCA back in 2004, big mistake.......it broke :)
I have gotten away from using a camcorder at all anymore really....it was a huge pain to carry it around the parks and we never sat around at home and watched the videos after we got back anyhow. We now take video clips with our digital camera if we want a shorter video of something......worked fantastic on our Disney Cruse last October.

I think you might mean the use of flash photography on dark rides where they do make announcements along the lines of "no flash pictures". Now there's something that hurts your eyes!

well as i said flash would definetely bother me. ouch in the dark LOL. but i dont have any issues with camcorder screens or the led red record light. as long as it doesnt FLASH or make noise. i personally think its wonderful for someone to record their memories!:D i have ones from when i was a kid, talking like 5-6 years old, and some from about 10 years old. i couldnt thank my mom enough for it all. its nice to be able to look back at those things and i want to be able to show my lil boy too:) thanks for the answers though, i didnt think there was a rule against it, we always did!

I dont have an official answer for you, but I know from our last trip (april) we were never told/asked to secure loose items. This would include DH wereing a hat, me turning backwards and taking still shots of the kids behind me, or even recoring via digital camera (not camcorder) DS FULL ride of BTMRR.
So, I although I do not know the official rule, I do know taping and picture taking if fully allowed.

I think camcorders and anything else that produces light on a dark ride is really, well rude (flashing light kids toys go on this list!). I have had to sit with people filming on a boat in POTC more then once and it is very distracting and rather annoying. I have heard them say no flash photography on the loud speaker to those doing it, but I don't remember them specifically saying put away your video camera.

I think on outside rides they aren't an issue, but unless you can guarantee that your camcorder produces no light, small flash or big glaring LCD screen, don't bring them out on a dark ride as they really can ruin the ride and sometimes day (for migrane sufferers) for those who have to ride with you.

I know some rides do tell you no videotaping (soarin' comes to mind), and I totally agree about using my digital camera to record what I need to.
I used to be totally anal about flash pictures and let it get me in a bad mood, but then I had a lighbulb moment when riding behind a flash-happy family on IASW...
These people had come from a great distance and might not ever come here again. I, on the other hand had seen it all before, and will see it all again. Probaly sooner than later. Instead of getting upset, i thought about how cool it must be to see it all for the first time, and want to remember this vacation. I totally got a warm fuzzy feeling, and ever since then Flash Photography doesn't phase me. Well, almost. it super annoys me when the myspace generation has to take a picture of themselves in a dark ride, blinding everyone else on the ride!

I know that The Haunted Mansion halted the ride to tell someone to shut off there video camera. And since then I was told it probably had night vision and was interferring with the rides machanics.

saying dont bring them out is telling people what to do! look, if there is no rule bet your butt that MANY people, including me will. WHY? because it does NOT bother me when others do. at all. if i dont mind others recording, then i shall as well. i think that something like a little lcd screen bugs someone that is just being rediculously nit picky. like i said, video of vacation and rides at disneyland is something to be cherished in my household. i have no problem at all with others doing it and will continue to unless there is a rule.

As usual FairyCat, you've hit the nail on the head. :)

You know, those people may have come from a long distance to visit the parks and I can totally respect and appreciate that. BUT that does NOT excuse them using flash on rides, the FIRST thing I do when using a new camera is figure out how to turn OFF the flash, that way I can do it on the fly necessary.

Well good for you, it doesn't bother YOU but you can bet that just as FairyCat said it does bother OTHERS. I can get a migraine in seconds from someone using a flash, I can get a migraine from someone with those flashy light toys and yes, I've even had a migraine induced from someone's "little" lcd screen. IF your camera has NO lights visible on it then please use it! But do not expect me to remain silent if I feel a migraine coming on, I will for sure turn around and say something to whomever is using any type of lighted camera/video equipment. And if you think my attempt at avoiding a migraine is "ridiculously nit picky" you've obviously NEVER had a migraine and attempted to leave a dark ride and reenter the daylight, it's enough to bring me to my knees.
And to clarify, some rides DO say no flash or video photography. Be sure to use your camera on rides that do not specify that please.

Just because it is something that people do does not make it right. It's an unfortunate part of society that people are concerned solely with themselves and not with the public surrounding them, but that's another topic for another day. There was actually a big discussion not too long ago about flash pictures on dark rides (wish I could find the link to it) - which while it may not be the exact same thing as using a camcorder, the lights that they produce can be just as menacing. It's a balance of things and you should consider the pros and cons maybe of each ride. Using cameras, camcorders, or anything else with lights while on dark rides like POTC are completely different than a well lit ride that is outdoors and can completely ruin the experience for people. How would you feel if you were in their shoes? And if you do, don't be alarmed to have someone mention something about it in either a nice or not-so-nice manner.

I and many others on this board take alot of photo's while we are in the park and I think most of us are respectful of how the cameras we may use may detract from some one else's experience. But trust me, if people approach a strange in an agressive or not so nice manner than they better be prepared to take the heat. There are a lot of non english speaking folks in the parks and they do not seem to have a clue about what they should not be doing.

It's one thing to not have a clue because you don't speak english and something else entirely to take the "I know, but just don't care" approach, lol. Just like it's one thing to politely ask someone some to please stop taking flash photos and something else entirely to scream at them for it. And its bound to happen both ways on occasion. Boy did I take the heat for asking someone to turn off their flash once on POTC. I ended up taking the flash full on in the face. Talk about a nightmare and completely childish on the part of the girl I was asking. Too bad we can't all be mind readers and know who just doesn't have a clue.

Heck, I used to be a flash user and I feel so bad to this day about it. Every time I see one of my flash photos from DLR I have to groan. Oh man, I can't believe I used to do that! I would never even consider it now. Just like you said, I'm now in that group who is a lot more respectful now about how my action's impact someone else's experience.
