Camcorder?

We have a Kodak Playsport we plan on bringing. I am hoping to be able to get some snorkeling videos.

I will be Bring a point and shot, and should i bring a Camcorder on my Disney Cruise?

You might consider buying a newer point and shoot that takes hi-def video. I have several cameras purchased in the last year or two that exceed the quality of my camcorder from around four years ago. I no longer take a camcorder anywhere.

I love the quality of a good camcorder. No Doubt. But, truth is... I never carry one around. Once I do, I'm committed to babysitting it. A good waterproof point and shoot that does video can go anywhere I can. And comfortably in my pocket. Added bonus is that the digital files they generate are easily imported into my computer for editing. Tape takes a long time to move.

FLIP!

There are a few different versions of the Cisco Flip Video Camera, but general it will take 1 or 2 hours (depending upon model) of 720p video. Starting cost is around $80.

A few notes about this:

1. It fits in the palm of your hand so no bulk.
2. Easier than using an ATM for operating it. Has 5 buttons on the whole thing.
3. It is NOT waterproof.
4. It uses USB for recharging so bring along a power strip that has a USB charging port.
5. Zoom is somewhat limited.

I cant imagine not having video.I would miss all the great things that my kids say! ( and can never remember!)

FLIP!

I almost bought a flip. They are great cameras but I have a friend with one and I now recommend the Kodak Playsport if someone is thinking about one of these for several reasons (Now this could have changed with newer models because I researched this a year ago):

1. The playsport uses reusable media. If you feel up the memory on the Flip you have to download to a computer. This could be a pain if you are out longer than normal and fill up the memory. With the Playsport you just take enough memory cards with you as it uses standard SD cards like most digital cameras.
2. The playsport has waterproofing. It can be submerged up to 9 feet. I have used mine at waterparks, in the pool, etc...
3. The playsport has cheap removable batteries. I bought a separate charger so now I can record longer (to complement the extra flash cards I purchased.)

The downside to the playsport is inside dark places it isn't quite as good as the Flip. The difference is pretty minimal though and the video quality is very similar between the two devices.

Definitely compare the two and see what you think.

I say take your reocder because so manny of them are small and the quality isn't bad:cool1:

I like my sony and i have a digtal still camera that takes video and the quality isn't too bad.

buy the kodak playsport, its waterproof, shockproof and it takes 1080p video, i have a 32 gig card in it and i can shoot about 8 hours of video in 720p mode. with a click of a button it switches to camera mode and takes good photos.

I love the playsport. The photos are not too bad but I wouldn't use them to develop with. I use a Canon 50D for most photos so I have high expectations for photos I will get developed.

I am a photo and video nut so I have both a dslr and a hi def video camera full 1080p.

That being said though, I have found I can end up babysitting them too so our family also have a couple of smal point and shoot cameras. When riding the duck for example, they fit in a zip lock bag and then into my swim shorts (secure pocket).

I like the video camera if you plan for it (e.g. pirate party on deck and fireworks). I woke up one morning at 5 am and walked around the entire ship (Dream) and the only people around were the occasional cast member. I have alot of fantastic video of the ship with no one around.

I also have some fantastic video of the family at castaway cay. Not to mention Donald Ducks' inaugural ride on the Aquaduck, the sail away party, and on and on and on...:rotfl:

I am a big video buff, spending hours editing and working with home video. That said, for each of our cruises, I have been amazed at how little footage we end up making. Most of it is on the excursions. So translation: I would still bring something... but be prepared for less use than expected.

This trip, I plan to not lug the camcorder onto Castaway, since our camera has a video function in case the priceless occasion comes up.
