I believe that taking mental health days help you from getting to where you have to take off a lot of time for illness, so yes, I take one or two per year.

I don't think Americans take off enough time as it is.

Where I work, using sick days for vacation is the norm. We have locations all over the country and I was told when I started, we use sick leave just like additional vacation days. So it's not a problem. After all, we only get 4 sick days a year; it's pretty hard to abuse it. After doctor's appts, etc. there isn't much left.

My own boss comes up to me and says, by the way, I am going to be sick on Friday.

I have five sick days a year at my current job, and if I don't take them, I lose them. I just used my last one yesterday due to a bad fall on ice in the parking lot of the bank next door while on my lunch break on Wednesday. I messed up my knee pretty badly and could barely bend it, so my boss let me take a sick day yesterday and called someone else to cover my shift for me. But I usually don't call in sick for nonsense things. Every other time I've called in this year, it's been for a legitimate reason.

My job allows me to take my sick time off for a sick child. That's not counted as some kind of violation. Actually, I've probably taken off more sick time for her than for me! :)
