All of the recipes I find for hummus call for tahini. I cannot find the stuff anywhere! Is there anything I can substitute it with, or just omit it?

TIA! :disrocks:

I hear people use peanut butter instead, but I haven't tried it myself.

I've never made this myself, but remember seeing it on a cooking board that I visit:

Hummus, Peanut Butter
Source: "Good Eats" on Food Network
Yield: About 3 cups

2 to 3 cloves garlic
1 can garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained and liquid reserved
2 to 3 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
A handful fresh parsley leaves
1 lemon, zested and juiced
Pinch freshly ground black pepper
Pinch kosher salt
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Chop the garlic finely in a food processor. Add the beans and 1/2 of the reserved liquid and process finely or to desired consistency.

Add the peanut butter, parsley, lemon zest and juice, black pepper, and salt. Process until it forms a paste. Drizzle in the olive oil and process until it reaches the consistency of mayonnaise.

I am so tired, I swore you were looking for homemade humans. Sigh.

Lindsay, have you looked in the health food sections of your local stores? This is where I found it in our local small-town Kroger store.

I found it at Safeway, but not in the health food section where I was expecting to find it (and not at Trader Joes where I was really expecting to find it). It was in the aisle that had the Mexican, Asian, etc food.

There are recipes that I found that don't call for it, so I think that it would also be ok to omit it.

I make homemade hummus and don't use tahini, I think it comes out pretty good - even my VERY picky dd's love to eat it. I just put everything in the food processor, and blend (chick peas, lemon juice, salt, garlic & olive oil). Don't know if that's the "correct" recipe, but it tastes good to us!!

I make mine the same way and we all love it :confused3

If you have a "Trader Joe's" near you, I think they carry it. (DF does the shopping... I think that's where she gets it).

You can probably use peanut butter, with sesame oil for the flavoring. Add less olive oil.

You might try looking for tahini in a health food store. It's usually in the Middle Eastern section. :)
