I want a new camera..here are my requirements...digital (of course) under hopefully 400, but will look to about 800, I don't really want an SLR -I want a super zoom point & shoot, able to take shoots one after another (fast) like soccer pictures. Also from push to snapping the photo quick-I have children..they move fast. I was looking at Canon S5-IS, my neighbor got Canon Rebel XSi ( I think or XTi) I like how fast hers is. Thanks!

If you can wait, Canon announced the S5 replacement, the SX10 IS. Even if you are going to go with the S5, you might want to wait until the new one is available b/c the S5 price should drop. I had the S1 IS and have the S2 IS. I have really liked them. While they do not compare to my DSLR, the S2 still stays in my bag.

The XSi is a DSLR. That's why its fast I've never used the S5, so I can't comment on how fast it can be when compared to a DSLR. If you want that fast shutter speed one after another for soccer, good luck. No P&S will be faster than even the lowest cost DSLR. Check out the new Canon XS as well. It's cheaper than the XSi which will allow you to stay within budget and pick up a decent lens to boot.

I think Either the S5 or the new sx10 will fit your bill VERY well.

They should both be 'close' to the speed of an slr - My S2 tracked and shot both my daughter and fighter jets really well..

The S5 is already on sale at some stores ( CC online) but the SX10 has a zoom that goes both wider and further than the S5 - and has a newer gen processor.. You might want to look at it for the extra money.

I just sold my S2is and bought the SX110... just days before the announcement of the sx10... The SX10 would have been tempting, but I got the SX110 for its smaller size, but still good zoom.

Good luck (I can't wait to play with my new one at Disney in a month).. I shot several thousand pics with my S2 last disney trip - I'm hoping to beat that this time

I have an S2 IS and the speed doesn't come close to that of my D40 even using a 'slow' lens. However, it's much faster then your average PnS. I used the S2 IS during many a soccer game and was quite happy with the results. It sounds as if the S5 or it's upgrade will suit you well.

The Canon S5 takes 1/2 second between shots on continuous mode. I found the speed plenty enough for daytime sports photos if the settings are correct. You will throw out many pics but get the "in the air" action shot if you keep the shutter pressed continuously.
If a super-zoom is what you want look at all the latest models including the Panasonic FZ28 and maybe the newest Canon SX1 although it's not available yet.

I think that you'd have to try the camera to determine if it's fast enough for you. On paper it may seem fast but in real time it may miss the shot. I have a Panasonic FZ20 (12x optical zoom p&s) and while it can get close with the zoom and it can track the action, if I am not prefocused it misses many shots. I have taken a picture of a soccer kick only to have the ball yards down the field and only get the after the shot kick picture. If you use the burst mode you can usually get a good action shot but you'll be deleted more than you keep.

Another family on my son's team has a Canon XT and has let me use it during the games and when I use this I can get so many more action shots instead of being a second or step off.

The new Canon SX1 IS shoots 4 pictures per second, so it might do what you want. There will be a big gap between it and the Rebel XSi in many ways - price (cheaper), size (smaller), image quality (not nearly as good), focus speed (much slower), delay between pressing the shutter and taking the picture (longer), complexity (much lower), and low light performance (much worse). Most of those differences are true when comparing any P&S to any DSLR.

I don't know the point and shoot market well at all. Very few can shoot lots of pictures quickly. I think the S5 takes 1.5 pictures per second.
