My dad gave me a foodsaver for Christmas. I have been wanting one for several months. Any tips or hints you can give me on using the foodsaver? Has anyone used the containers for marinating?

DW got me 1 too! I ran out & got Mason jars (wide mouth) and already bottled up the soup I made the day after Cgristmas (ham & bean). Aslo played around with marshmallows and soda cans. Repackaged all of the leftovers. I'm having a blast!

LOVE my Foodsaver. I like using the mason jars the best, and have my sugars all stored in them...no little buggies can get in. Ick.

We did discover you shouldn't foodsave garlic. For some inexplicable reason, DH bought mass quantities of garlic  so I foodsaved them in a bag. Well, it must have emited gases, because the bag expanded...I swear, you could have played soccer with the thing. We were afraid it would explode, and when we finally decided we should pop it before it did, DH took it into the garage, while we all (myself and 3 kids) peered around the door, in anticipation of the impending explosion. My DH stabs the bag with a knife, and jumps back out of harms way. Nothing happened, except the bag slowly deflated. And boy, did we all feel silly! LOL :teeth:

Funny how I saw this post today.

Just got finished foodsaving my hamburg and sausages!

I love my foodsaver! I just got the one with the jar attachment and have not used it yet. I will soon.

for soups and liquids, I would freeze them in one of those glad or ziplock bowls then take it out of the bowl and foodsave the frozen soup in a bag. Then you can just boil it right in the bag later.

My mom has had a food saver for years. I loved it... I guess I mentioned it a few times now because she got me one for christmas, but she got me the Rival one... it's supposed to be better than the foodsaver brand, she had a few problems with the foodsaver but overall loves it.

I can't wait to get to Indy at the end of this week to upack it and start freezing stuff!!!!

Also, don't try to us it on bread! We had gone to a Wonder outlet and bought 4 loaves of bread. I thought I could vacuum seal the bread. Well.....fresh bread REALLY smooshes!!!! :earseek: On the plus side...it was in a really small package!! :teeth:

I was actually wondering about bread. I did seal some stuff today and yesterday. No more wasted food for DH and I.

This is REALLY important! Garlic incorrectly preserved can contain botulism. Several years ago, a restaurant up here had put garlic in oil to flavour it and several people got very sick on caesar salad. Up until then, the health department hadn't really known to warn people about preserving garlic.
Just thought I'd mention that since it came up!:wave2:

You know, all this talk about preserving food makes me want to go dig out my foodsaver. I rec'd one as a wedding gift a couple of years ago but we were living in a small place then and it has been in storage ever since! Hmmmm.... let's see.... where did I put that?
