calling all vegetarians - is the meal plan worth it?

trying to decide if we want to add this option to our tickets.

I don't care for greasy fast food. I know dinner will offer more options, but the over the counter service and breakfast are my concern. I am picky about my salads (which seem to be the standby offering for vegetarian request) and this can get boring real quick. So what are my options? Would you suggest this option if my rate of return is only going to be about 20% of the time (ability to get vegetarian offerings)?

DD14 is vegetarian and eating out with her can be a challenge. One of the counterservice places that we loved was the Tangierine Café in Morocco. Great hummus, tabouleh and couscous. They have a vegetarian platter which includes all of these plus lentil salad and a slice of Moroccan bread.

In MGM, the ABC Commisary serves a vegetable stir fry that's not bad. I thought it was one of their better menu choices.

Tusker House in AK has a grilled vegetable sandwich on focaccia bread with a hummus spread that DD really liked a lot.

Columbia Harbor House serves a Lighthouse Sandwich (hummus with tomato and broccoli slaw) that looked good but DD opted for the vegetarian chili and garden salad that day.

I hope this helps. Some counterservice places are not going to be as vegetarian-friendly as others but if you study the menus ahead of time, you'll find something other than salad to eat.

edited to add:
Here's a link to an AllEarsNet.com page for counterservice vegan/veggie dining.

Sorry I can't answer your question but I absolutely know your delimma. Of all the places we vacation I have the worst time @ WDW trying to find food to eat. As you said salads get old real quick. Also I hate those veggie burgers they offer. By the time I get home from our trip I am staving.

Hope someone can answer your question.

Fresh at the Dolphin also has some great choices, and Boma too. If you are going with a small party I would say you might be better off not doing the meal plan, but a larger party(4 or more) I think you would enjoy the sit down meals together and I think you would come out even. The dessert is also a plus with the meal plan :sunny:

We are a vegetarian family and we've decided the dining option will not be good for us. BUT our 2 ds are only going to be 5 and 2 when we go next. It is more an issue of us not really being big eaters. This might change once the boys are older. I agree with the poster who suggested checking all ears. Find some yummy options and compare it to the vendors on the meal plan. Do a search over on the resturant boards for "vegetarian" to get an idea of some yummy options. When dh and I went on our honeymoon some 6 years ago we had a hard time finding veggie fare, but last year when we went we had plenty to eat!

We were there in 2004. First, let me say that we do eat dairy (eggs too) and fish, so we didn't seem to have any problems. when we stayed at CSR I would ask them to make me a wet vegie burrito even though it wasn't on the menu. They were yummy! But when we stayed at POFQ it was harder. I usually had a vegie burger there (they're Boca style). They had some good soup too. As far as eating in the parks, I think the meal plan is a good idea. The breakfast buffets have waffles, pastries and lots of fresh fruit. We would go as late as we could get and make it a brunch. At the counter service areas you can usually find cheese pizza, salads and the kids PB&J. Definetly check out the menus at http://www.wdwig.com/menu/menus.htm

In magic kingdom at columbia harbor house they have vegetarian chili or a hummus and tomato, broccoli coleslaw sandwich that is SO good!

In epcot there are TONS of decent meals at the land cafeteria. My personal fav. is the vegetable lasagna, very good.

In animal kingdom at tusker house there's a vegetable sandwich that isn't greasy at all and is very good also, i think it has eggplant, zucchini or something, i can't remember but it's good.

The only one I'm not sure about is MGM counter service because we ate at prime time cafe for lunch, they have a vegetarian stuffed pepper which is really good.

Hope this helps.
tricia.

thank you. i posted this link on the trip reviews and dining boards hoping to get some add'l responses.

our tots will be 5 and almost 3 at time of trip. neither are big eaters, so now you've got me rethinking the meal option.

yes, being veggie and eating out can be a challenge and salads get boring real quick (especially the half-head of iceberg with a mealy tomato smoothered in French dressing - you hafta have seen Intolerable Cruelties to appreciate that reference, baby field greens - wtbleep did you just call me?!).

:jester: happy party grais

Eating vegetarian at Disney can be tough. Do a lot of research at allearsnet (search through the menus) and have a game plan. That is what we did. And don't be afraid to ask for something to be made vegetarian. Mexico has a great Taco Salad that can be made vegetarian. If all else fails and you eat dairy, you can get a "grilled cheese" (a cheeseburger no meat) at any place that sells burgers. And yes they cut about $2 off the cost of a meal.
