How far in advance do you need to consult with the chef?

Chefs de Paris: didn't want pasta again, and WOW thank you Phllipe and Christian. ABSOLUTELY the best meal I have ever eaten in WDW. This is one of my recent finds, and they went way above and beyond. THANK YOU!!!!

So what did they create for you?? And how far in advance did you have to contact the chef? DH and I tend to be pretty spontaneous and have never made a PS appointment, but planning ahead would be worth it for a great vegetarian meal.

Pizzafari quit serving the veggie pizza some time ago.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I did like their veggie pizza.

Most of the time when you get there or maybee days a head. Either way they will help you. Hope you will enjoy the meal.

Sorry for the long delay in posting! They made me two taster soups (one veggie, one garlic and truffle oil); great veggie plate with baby veggies nicely seasoned; a sweet turnip tarte. People at the other tables were looking over to see my special dinner. The bill was embarassingly low so I left much more $$$ since it was so good. (I think that they charged me one entree price ie $15!)

I eat there quite often, but wanted a change from the only item I order, so called that afternoon. There was some confusion (the first person was only quoting the menu) so I asked for the manager, who said that it wouldn't be a problem and to ask for the chef. When I got there, my server was new and his English was not strong, so he called another server over. They eventually sent over another manager who then found the chef.

So........ a lot of people involved, but I think that if I had just dropped in and asked for a veggie meal they would have done something. This is one restaurant which GETS IT!

I have special requested things a few days in advance as well as just shown up spontaneously at a restaurant and asked my server. Both ways work okay, but if you have your heart set on something really special, it's best to make arrangements at least a couple of days in advance. I have gotten a special veggie noodle soup and vegan Tonga Toast that way.

During my last trip, I also visited Les Chefs de France, but being a vegan, there was little they could offer me. I had called in advance, but I got an answering machine. I left a message but never received a call back. (I had called other WDW restaurants in the past and left messages and always received a call back from them.) Anyhow, when I got there, I asked my server about the 2 vegetarian dishes on the menu. One was mac and cheese, so this was obviously out of the question. I had heard the other dish was also not vegan but wasn't positive. The server checked with the kitchen and confirmed that the 2nd dish was also lacto or ovo or both. So, I ended up getting plate of ratatouille, which I fortunately happen to like. However, it was a bit monotonous to just have a giant dish of ratatouille.

We also did the luau, which everyone enjoyed. The rest of my family thought the ribs and chicken were very tasty. I pre-ordered one of the veggie dishes, which was tasty, too.

Another thing I discovered: Kringla doesn't have any vegan items according to the chef there, despite what it says in the book Vegetarian Walt Disney World. :( I was really looking forward to a kringle or a bear claw. There were a couple of other things the book got wrong as well. It's always best to ask.

We also tried 50s Prime Time this trip. Contrary to what I was told the last trip, they could NOT make the stuffed peppers without the soy cheese since everything was premixed together. The server checked with the chef and came back and said they could make me a vegan Boca burger with some sauteed veggies on the side, but that was about it. It was okay, but nothing to write home about. I suppose if I made special arrangements, they'd come up with something better than that.

Hi!!

Check out the book Vegetarian Walt Disney World and Greater Orlando by Susan Shumaker and Than Saffel. It gives detailed info about the sit-down and counter service restaurants and many of the chefs at Disney and other Orlando area restaurants.

I learned so much while reading this book. The best part was reading about Chef Annette Grecchi-Gray who is now the Chef at Jiko at AKL. Both times DH and I dined at Jiko, we had the good fortune to meet Chef Annette. The first time we ate at Jiko, she actually served us our dessert!!! She chatted with us about our meal (i had the veggie entree. Be forwarned, the portion could easily be consumed by two) and the reaction people have regarding the eclectic menu at Jiko. She seems to be so shy but I was so impressed with the fact she was so willing to chat.

Good luck!!

We had a wonderful experiance at the Coral Reef, with the Chef going way out of his way to make us happy. My DH didn't want the veg. dish from the menu so he came out and talked with us, asked him what he liked, and came up with three ideas (it was hard to pick). We settled on an omlete because the Chef said he loved to make them. It was a good choice and was amazingly good. We have a food allergy (milk and nuts) in the family, which is why we were talking to the Chef in the first place. Not only did he make my son exactly what he asked for, he made a special dessert for him. Not just non-dairy icecream... he made him brownies, cookies, and a chocolate sauce and made him a huge plate with Rice Dream ice cream, fresh barries and the cookies and brownies. My son was in heaven. No other Chef went out of his way like this, they all made him grilled chicken and some made him fresh fries, steamed veggies, and so on- but they only ever offered him Rice Dream for dessert (one told me all Disney sit downs now have Rice Dream). This is the third time that our #1 experiance has been with the Coral Reef.
