Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

1) I am coming back from multiple injuries that are overuse injuries in nature. So, I am scared of combining long runs as back to back runs. I have been trying to follow Hal Higdons plan which has midweek runs on T-W-Th starting at 3-3-3 and progressing to 3-4-3 and 3-5-3. The weekend long run adds a mile each week. I am wondering if this will be enough to prep me for GSC back to backs? any thoughts?

3) Has anyone tried something like yaxtrax or stabilicers? I hate the "dreadmill" as I call it. It fine for 3-4 miles, but anything longer than that and I'm miserable. I'd like to try to get outside, but the conditions being so bad, one of these devices seems the only option.

I would not worry about back to backs, especially if you are injured. You should have enough training to get the races done without them, assuming you plan to "run" the races and not "race" the races (meaning a more casual training pace for the race versus race pace)

I have not tried yaktrax yet, mainly because I don't run on roads/path that are 100% snowy. I always look for clear roads, and if portions of them are snowy, I just try to slow down and deal with it. I would think that running with yaktrax on mixed road conditions would wear them out pretty quickly.

So I need to vent!! Just did 8 miles. My friend and I do a run 1 mile and walk .2 combo. Averaged 12:35m/m. We run on a busy street that many people we know drive by. I had a "friend" post on FB that we were beasts for walking in the cold. I replied that we were running and explained how we run. She then wrote kudos to your "running" then. Really ticked me off. Is is crazy that we do a run/ walk combo? Should we be running the whole time? I probably shouldn't let it bother me, but it does! I just love how others judge your workouts!! Ugh!! Thanks for allowing me to vent here. Hopefully y'all understand! We are planning on adding a half mile to each week so that we will run 10 the first of Feb. if we run 10 three weeks in a row, do y'all think we will be ready for the half?

In NJ and having a very frustrating time with training right now. Doing all three races and my long run so far was 9 miles. But this week --- yikes! Between the snow and ice (that my town doesn't seem to know how to remove) the roads are WAY too treacherous to run on and we don't have sidewalks. The road is a single lane right now. Hoping for some melting by tomorrow!

I have yax trax but it's so cold here that the ice is far too solid and slippery--even with the yax trax. Especially with a single lane road.

My last run was a New Year's day fun run, when I was supposed to do a four miler and missed a turn somehow. Ended up only doing 3 miles and never felt like a got into a good rhythm at all. A frustrating run, in other words.

I've spent the last 2 days doing exercise DVDs. I don't have access to a treadmill and I hate them anyway. PRAYING to be able to get outside tomorrow! I tried today--all bundled up for the 15 F temps -- and had to come back in--it just wasn't safe.

Bah, humbug on the snow! And of course, we haven't had this much snow -- this was our third storm -- in about 10 years.

Remember -
You are still a beast out in the weather. Devour the quotes as it seems like they were either in their warm car or on Facebook:) bravo! I am dreading a run in the cold tomorrow.

Is there anyone on this board from Maryland? I am worried about wimping out on my longest run/walk in a couple of weeks and could use a buddy - but love this board for all of good advice and support!

Thanks! I'm going to invite her on my 8.5 "run" next Saturday. Think she will come?!!

Ha ha, that would be awesome!

I'm also struggling with the weather here. It only seems to be warm during the week when I can't squeeze a long run into my day/go when it's light out. I actually joined a Planet Fitness (cause it's cheap!) for a few months, because as much as I hate running on the treadmill, I knew I'd have trouble with the cold- and now that it's been snowing every few days this winter I'm really glad I did! It's hot and boring in the gym, but I'm getting the miles done, which is more important to me right now. I just worry that my pace is off from when I'm outside and I'm really hoping for a warm/no snow weekend soon!

I did the same thing! I am over the snow and ready to get back outside. Or better yet, get me to florida right now! Lol

I'm with you all. Today I did my 10 miles on the treadmill. It was awful. An hour and 45 minutes of running and I got exactly no where:( the killer was if I looked straight ahead I can see out the wall of windows in my gym which look out at a highway. Those are the only well plowed/ice free roads still. It was total sunshine, and I could see dry pavement. It was not making me feel better about being stuck inside.

Really hope that the roads improve enough for me to get an outdoor long run in next week. Keeping chugging along everyone:)

I've got my 10 tomorrow, but I've been stuck on the TM for months now, so I'm kinda used to it at this point. I admit, though, that I'm wondering how I'll keep myself occupied. Maybe I'll finally jump into binge-watching Downton Abbey...? Or save my long run for the Bachelor premiere tomorrow night? Man, talk about polar opposites of the culture spectrum.... :D I did buy some warm Under Armor gear today. Don't see myself breaking it out in the next few days with the crazy sub-zero highs forecasted, but I'd like to get outside SOON!

Do you have Netflix? House of Cards is a great binge watch:) but it would be great to watch Downton before the new season goes too far - then you can watch in real time:)

I do have Netflix and have heard great things about House of Cards. Maybe that'll be my choice tomorrow! :)

downton abbey was my choice on the treadmill last year!

Has anyone received correspondence about the weekend from Run Disney? It says they will send something but I haven't received thing. I have all my confirmations from registration and track shack - just wondering...

I haven't received anything in about a month. I got basically a reminder email, no new info in it, about 1 month ago. I erased it or I'd get the date for you.

I stumbled on this thread today by happy accident, and am so glad I did! Got a lot of really great info, thanks much!

PHM is my first rD race, super excited! Figure this experience will surpass any of my previous half marathons. This race is my celebration of a 2+ year lifestyle change that's resulted in a major weight loss and being "bit" by the race bug.

Wish I could have done the GSC...but had already committed to a half St Pats weekend before I knew PHM would be a reality, and I figured attempting GSC with another half 2 weeks later would be inviting an injury and I have too many races planned this year for that, LOL!

So happy training, can't wait for race day! :wave2:

hi all!
Thanks for all the information and commiseration you all have shared. As I prep for my very first half marathon, I am overwhelmed by how quickly time has passed since I decided to do this..... the weather is sabotaging my training and I am worried that I will not be prepared. The Cape is snowy and icy, as many others are experiencing, and I cant get out to run.
I hate to think that im going to have to join Planet Fitness in order to get my runs in : (
My run partner and I did do a 2.5 hour walk today! At least it is something...
As always I continue to thank those at DIS, for encouragement, experience and fun!
I am so looking forward to meeting some of you at PHM:banana::banana::banana:

Got 7 miles in today at the indoor track at the town rec center. Tired of running in circles, but the Ohio weather just is not cooperating. I am going to WDW on Thursday for 8 days so should be able to get in 2 week day short runs and a weekend long run outside. Yippee!! Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

I put on my YaxTrax and went outside in the freezing drizzle on the ice and snow covered road (with one lane only plowed) today. It took me almost 1 1/2 hours to go a little over 4 miles-- about an 18.5 mph pace. Every time a car came down the road--in either direction -- I stopped and moved off the road. That took up a lot of time lol.

On the bright side--I didn't fall and break my arm--or my neck!
