Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

For the cold weather runners, tomorrow I will be running 8 miles in 28° weather. I have UA running pants that are made for the cold. What I don't have is upper body wear. I do have a long sleeve running shirt that isn't cold gear. What should I wear to stay warm but not overheat? Thanks so much for answering my many, many questions on here!!

Well....that would be enough for me, but I tend to "run warm". You could just put on another shirt (a short sleeve one would keep your core warm). A wind jacket might also have (if you have one)

If it's not windy, that would be enough for me. If it is, layer a tank underneath your long sleeve. Don't forget gloves and an ear warmer or hat! :)

I ran 10 miles last week in 19 degree temps...I wore long leggings, a short sleeve tech shirt under a long sleeve 1/2 zip pullover, a hat and gloves. I was pretty cold the first mile but then warmed up and was pretty comfortable the rest of the run.

Not for me! I would either layer under or over the ls shirt. In 40 degrees (windy) I wear a tank or light long sleeve and a half zip or jacket an sometimes ill take off the top layer if I'm wearing the lighter LS under. In 28, I would definitely wear two layers, especially bc you can take off a layer. I run warm too, but not warm enough to do 8 miles in 28 degrees in just a LS shirt! And definitely gloves (u can take them off easily) and a head band or hat. I sweat a lot no matter the temps, so sometimes ill fold my head band over so that only half of it is sweaty right away, then ill switch it for the second half.

It may be too late to add in my advice, but I've been running in temps as low as 5 degrees, and I wear polartec tights, headband and hat, mittens, a very light wool neck warmer, long sleeved stride top from Athleta and an Athleta running jacket - it's very lightweight but blocks the wind. The stride top is close fitting and super warm but very breathable Meryl fabric. In 28 degrees, I'd go with regular tights, stride-like top and lightweight running jacket. I agree with jmasgat - if you have a running jacket, that would be ideal because it blocks the wind but is light and breathable. I would not wear a hat - just ear-warming headband - and my light running gloves.

Our temperatures have been in the single digits lately, so my 10-mile run yesterday was on the treadmill. Boo. Great run, but really miss the outside air, scenery, etc. With the ice and snow, the single digit temps and strong winds (I live on a lake) I'm running short distances outside and long runs inside. Fortunately, we'll spend a week in Newport Beach at the end of January, so I'm really looking forward to my long run there!

This one felt great! I just tried it at work and it felt wonderful, so I will definitely be adding it to my stretch routine! I want to avoid cortisone shots unless the pain gets really, really bad. I did have one once for a cyst and it was not an experience that I would like to repeat anytime soon :(
Yay, I'm so glad it helped! Yeah, I wound up with a bad case if cortisone flare and literally couldn't walk at all for a day, couldn't do much of anything for a week. It did help in the end, but I'll avoid that experience in the future, too!

Thanks for all of the advice. I don't have a light jacket so I guess I will wear a tank under my LS shirt. I do have a headband that goes over my ears. The coldest run for me so far was in the low 40's. My choices are run outside for a long run or not run at all. I can only do 30 minutes max on a TM. It makes me too dizzy when I get done. 50° for me is perfect running weather!!

That's so funny you say that about getting dizzy on the treadmill! During my 10-mile run yesterday, I was absolutely fine - able to pick up the pace gradually throughout and felt great. But the minute I stepped off that treadmill, super dizzy!

Ooo, I wanna be added to the list!

Imbri, Pop, Half!

I kept seeing your PTR, emilyindisney, but I hadn't opened it. Now i'm reading it. =D

This is me! I'm fine while I'm on it. As soon as I get off, I'm sooo dizzy!! Sometimes I have to hold on to something!! Crazy!

Hey ladies! I'm up in the middle of the night with a bad earache and sore neck, and not even a hope for getting back to sleep. So I thought while I'm up, I'd ask a few questions I've been meaning to get around to...

1. If we're starting in the last corral, when should we expect to actually start running? I'm trying to figure out my fuel plan and the timing of it. I've got a sensitive tummy so don't want to eat to close to the beginning of my run, but don't want to eat too early, either, and not have what I need to get off to a good start.

2. What kinds of foods will they have at the Race Retreat? Just things like bagels and bananas? I'm assuming no oatmeal or anything that would need any prep, correct? I do best with a breakfast of oatmeal with a few add-ins but figure I'd better start training with what I'll be eating on race day.

3. Speaking of the Race Retreat, refresh my memory - will we be getting tickets for entry with our race packets? I do see it confirmed in my registration but wasn't sure exactly what I'd need to get in.

4. I'm training at 30/30 - is this pace reasonably easy to do during the actual race? I'm thinking in terms of making my way along with the thousands of other runners. If I were walking, I'd stay to the outside. If I were running, I'd stay close to center. So if I'm doing 30/30, am I going back and forth? Trying to find a good midpoint? I know this sounds like a silly question, but as this is my first half marathon, I'm really not sure what to expect! :)

Thank you, Princesses! Now, back to my warm compress and wishes for rest... :headache::goodvibes

sorry you're sick :( i can only answer 3. we had paper wristbands in our packets that we wore to identify ourselves as race retreaters.

i wish i could answer 2, but we got there too late to enjoy anything but the port-a-potties. :(

1. Generally for the half marathons, the last corral goes off close to an hour after the first one. So if the first corral starts at 5:30, the last corral goes off a little before 6:30, and I suspect the idea is that the very last runners cross the start line right around 6:30.

4. I run/walk, and you will find tons of run/walkers during the race. Usually, as long as you keep a consistent line, stay close-ish to the side, and maintain awareness of other runners as you transition back and forth, you will be fine. There are a few tight stretches where it drops down to a single lane, and in those spots you may have to modify your pattern depending on what the people around you are doing, but in the wider sections you should have plenty of room to do your run/walk safely.

I can't answer your race retreat questions, though.

Is anyone besides me wishing this winter weather would quit for a while? I used to say "as long as it's winter,we might as well have snow". But now we are going to get hit again tomorrow--always on Sunday , it seems, my long run day.

I've already done one long run (11) on the TM, had two others slowed down by slushy road conditions. Looks like tomorrow will be another TM day. Fortunately it's a "step back" 8, so no worse than the 7 miler just did.

This is probably the snowiest/worst winter for outdoor running I've had in my now 6 full years of running.

I guess I should be thankful I'm not living in my hometown(Danvers, MA). They just got socked with nearly 2 ft of snow!

no winter here, but rainy season, yes, wish it would be over with. it rained on and off all day today, and by the time i'd be setting out for my run, it was a steady torrential downpour. usually if that happens while i'm already running, i'll stay out and finish the run, but i have no motivation to start in that condition!

lots of rain today means tomorrow morning should be cool though, so i will get my run in then!

1. If we're starting in the last corral, when should we expect to actually start running?
Last corral should start around an hour after the first - figure around 6:30.

2. What kinds of foods will they have at the Race Retreat? Just things like bagels and bananas?
That's what I recall - bagels, toast, fruit, coffee. I made oatmeal in my room and brought it to RR in one of those cheap plastic containers. Post-race RR serves a full hot bfast.

[QUOTE3. Speaking of the Race Retreat, refresh my memory - will we be getting tickets for entry with our race packets?[/QUOTE]
We got wristbands this year - fit them w/ packet pick up and they allowed entrance to RR before and after the race.

4. I'm training at 30/30 - is this pace reasonably easy to do during the actual race?
Yes and no... In all rD races, I've found that there's no set pattern of movement; you really need to just be aware if what's going on around you. Sometimes it's all running in the middle and walking on the sides, other times it's mostly walkers in the middle and runners on the sides, and still other times it's a mish-mash of both. I find the best method is to follow the majority of the herd and try not to do too much weaving in and out - that sometimes means walking through a run interval or running through a walk, but makes things MUCH less stressful and tiresome!

Hope you feel better soon!

i think i've asked this before, but i can't remember, and i'm sketching out more plans.

i know we cannot walk to the race start. no problem there. the walk from the drop-off area to the corrals is long enough before the race :)

but can we walk into epcot straight from the reunion area? if it's possible, i'm wondering what is the fastest way to get back to the resort (staying at YC) - walking through epcot or taking the bus?

I do!!! I have a bunch of cold weather running gear that I haven't even used this year yet because it seems its constantly snowing or in the case of this month, below freezing temps! I'm not a TM hater but I am getting sick of it! I have an 11miler planned for Monday as my last long run before tink and it seems ill be on the mill once again as its still snowy plus the highs next week are around zero.... Sigh. Maybe it will get better in feb.

Since we're asking questions I've got two:

1. Is there milk in the race retreat? After experimenting, I've found I have most energy on a run when I have my usual bowl of cereal. I can probably make do with a bagel, but would prefer tried and true. I can bring the cereal and milk too if I need too.

2. After the race, and a little time in the race retreat, how badly does the monorail get backed up? Will I be standing in endless lines? Just kinda want to know what to expect (we're staying at the grand Floridian).

3. Does anyone have experience with what the race retreat is like for spectators during the race? The site lists amenities, including some characters. I'm just trying to be able to share some info with my mom and son. I got them the VIP package because my mom hates to be cold so I wanted to give her an option if it turns out to be freezing, and my son would probably like the characters and food. And I TOO wanted some food after the race!

4. What do they have food-wise after the race in the retreat? Are there any pretzels or something salty or just bananas and bagels too.

Also- to answer about starting time, when they release the program, each corral start time might be in there. They were for wine and dine but not for tink.

And regarding run/walk, I second the advice to just stick to a lane of your own close ish to the side. You don't want to weave back and forth every minute. Sometimes if I know I'm gonna walk, I'll run sort of behind someone walking a ways ahead of me and then when I slow to a walk, put my hand up. The best advice I can give for a disney race I think it to just look behind you before you move to pass someone. Of course I've never run as crowded a race as princess, so I'm speaking from limited experience and other races.

Me Too! I am done with this weather. This is my first half, and I signed up for the GSC. I have never trained outside in the winter before. I usually just spin and run on the treadmill or lap swim in the winter. This has been miserable. I am actually looking for some advice as to how to adjust my training to deal with it.

1) I am coming back from multiple injuries that are overuse injuries in nature. So, I am scared of combining long runs as back to back runs. I have been trying to follow Hal Higdons plan which has midweek runs on T-W-Th starting at 3-3-3 and progressing to 3-4-3 and 3-5-3. The weekend long run adds a mile each week. I am wondering if this will be enough to prep me for GSC back to backs? any thoughts?

2) This cold. I can't possibly do my planned 10 miles outside today. Temps are single digits with wind making it -15. I have run 8 miles in low single digits, but on dry roads. Right now I have snow and ice covered roads, and that is just too high a risk to take in my opinion. I am really frustrated about it, but I figure treadmill is better than nothing. If this horrible weather keeps up and I only manage 1 or 2 long runs outside in the next 6 weeks will I be okay? I figure sooner or later there has to be a weekend with okay weather, but I don't see it likely this weekend or next looking at long range forecasts:(

3) Has anyone tried something like yaxtrax or stabilicers? I hate the "dreadmill" as I call it. It fine for 3-4 miles, but anything longer than that and I'm miserable. I'd like to try to get outside, but the conditions being so bad, one of these devices seems the only option.

I hope many of you are having more luck with your training than I am! And Happy New Year!
