Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

Just finished my "run rehearsal". I did a 5k Wednesday, 10k yesterday and 12 1/4 miles today. My legs seemed confused at times…sometimes feeling good and other tired. I thought about going the whole 13.1, but I ran out of water and 2 hours seemed a good place to stop.

Good luck with all the long running/walking this weekend!

:banana::banana: Awesome! I'm doing my first this weekend. Any advice you took away from your test? I'm still nursing a bout of ITBS, so I'll be doing a LOT of walking; figuring I'll walk 3/4 of 4 miles tomorrow and at least half of 8-9 miles Sunday. At this point, I just want time on my feet without irritating my knee; I know I'm capable of running more on race days IF I don't re-injure anything.

Ouch on the ITBS. I got that a couple months after the 2009 Princess and doctor had me stop running and "fast walking" for three months and I got PT exercises to do. Lastly he said only running every other day so this has been an experiment. So far so good. I would say the one thing to do is ice and aleve after the run/walk. Just try to keep the inflammation down.

I had it baaaad last year and found that not running didn't help at all; I took a couple weeks off to let the inflammation go down, but once it did I ran regularly, stopping before pain hit. Luckily, walking has never bothered it at all for me, so when the pain hit out of nowhere in the WDW half, I just walked the rest with no problems.

My chiro actually thinks it's not ITBS because my ITB is fine; the tension causing friction seems to be coming from my ankle up, not my hip down. I have issues in that foot, ankle and knee from previous injuries and it just doesn't handle our super-slopey roads well. I've pretty much accepted that I'm destined to walk a lot of any FL races over 10 miles because there simply aren't any flat surfaces here!

ETA: And yep, I may as well buy stock in Aleve at this point, lol! It works sooo much better than Advil for that special knee pain. Know what else I've found works well? Plain ol' aspirin. The 99-cent kind. Who knew?!

Any of those with previous experience have a guess to when waivers will be up with information on corral placements? I'm dealing with yet another injury and starting to get nervous. I can walk fine, but running is extremely painful after 6 miles right now. I'm hoping for improvement within the next four weeks, but in the meantime, I am curious if my corral placement will reassure me thst if I have to slow way down or walk I'll still have enough cushion to finish.

Also anyone done these races after a lot of treadmill training? I was fine outside through 10 miles, but our roads just have not been clear since then, and with the injuries I don't want the extra risk of poor footing on icy surfaces, so I've been stuck indoors for two weeks. Next 10 days don't look particularly promising for a warmup to clear the roads.

Can't remember the year, maybe 2010, I did all my training on the and it looks like I am headed that way again. The last time I was outside was a long walk, about 12 miles, December 28, when I was in San Antonio.

It can be done, I listen to a lot of music and get a lot irritated by others turning up the volume on the TV's.

I trained for my first half marathon on a treadmill only! Not the best situation, but I put the incline at 1.5% or 2% and set it at a faster pace than I was aiming for during the race. Of course it's totally different than running outside, but I think as long as you're getting the miles in, you're doing well!

Did you feel like training only on the treadmill under prepared you at all? This is my first half, I've only done up to 10k events until now. Where I live is super hilly, there is literally no way I can run more than half a mile without encountering hills, so I have plenty of hill experience. And I know the 10k and 1/2 courses at Disney will seem flat to me. But still, I'm worried that only running on the treadmill for the six weeks prior to GSC will not be enough somehow? I do get to FL a week ahead of the GSC, and can get a few short runs in by my parents house before we head to WDW. But, I plan to keep them short and easy as they will be in the week before the race. Am I just overthinking this as a first timer? I see you've done many PHMs, so it sounds like you have a much better handle on training than me:) I've done up to 12 on the treadmill, last Sunday, and it was as much a mental exercise as a physical thing for me.

I have done about 95% of all my training for all five 1/2 marathons I've completed on the treadmill and been more than prepared. I am seriously a Florida girl and running below 40 is just not happening. It's 20 outside right now in VA and I feel like I might actually become an icicle if I stay out too long :rotfl: The last run I did outside was a 5k at the end of November, with my previous run outside being Princess last year... I shaved 5 mins off my time on that 5k and got 24 min PR with no outside runs in 8 months. As long as you aren't bothered by long runs staring out the window/at one of those mildly obnoxious TVs right in front of you, good training can definitely still be done on the treadmill :) I would like to get in a few outside runs before next month just for good measure, but with this weather I'm not sure it's going to happen this year.

For what it's worth.... I did the Tink 10k then the half (not counting all the walking in the parks) and honestly the half was much "easier" then I thought. I almost felt warmed up for the half. I always get shin cramping my first mile or two into a half and never did this time. I'm feeling much more confident with the princess even though I'm throwing in the 5k this time as well too!

Joan, that is awesome! I have done no back-to-backs, but maybe tomorrow I'll run an easy 5 and then do my 14 on Sunday. Given our weather, it's all going to be indoors--more snow on the way and bitter cold (which I don't mind as much as the lousy footing that comes with snow)

DVCFan1994 Don't worry about being undertrained because of the TM. To some extent, miles are miles, no matter where they are done. If you still are nervous, then play around with incline during your TM runs. This will help simulate the normal incline changes of outside terrain.

I train 2 of my 3 runs a week on TM, and I don't find it to be a disadvantage (although who knows....maybe I'm really a cheetah and the TM is holding me back!!!:rotfl2:)

AFM, just wishing the roads will be clear enough on Sunday to craft some kind of route for my 14 miler. Oh well, it is what it is.

Count me in as another treadmill runner right now. I ran all but 1 run from Dec 2 - Jan 19 (Tinkerbell half) on the treadmill. I have cold weather gear, including YakTrax but it's been SO bitter cold and icy that I haven't attempted going outside at all. I try to shake the boredom by doing some intervals, or shuffling in new music. I simply can't manage to watch TV while running, I need that music beat!

Anyhow, it's not the uphills that you'll have to worry about during the half. It's the effect of the downhills AFTER the half. FL is relatively flat (ok, almost entirely flat) and I would say the only downhill that might affect quads would be the underpass by the contemporary. But that's only in the half, not the 10k. I'm not sure about the 10k course but if it goes around epcot and the boardwalk area, that is very gradual variations. I'm trying to get outside at least a little before GSC, but the weather is just NOT cooperating. Anyhow, my quads were fine during Tink (there are 2 of those underpasses on the course), despite the lack of outside running - but I felt them the next day for sure. And to add perspective, the underpass hill was more significant than the exit ramps that I've encountered on the Disney roads.

I'm not sure if the lack of outdoor training affected how my feet/ankles felt after Tink or if it was the shoes I wore. I'm leaning towards the shoes though. But honestly, given the choice between treadmill and a little pain during the race vs. running in negative 15 degrees with ice and wind, I'm going to be on the treadmill! :thumbsup2 Figures the one time I sign up for a winter race, we have the coldest weather in recent memory. :confused3

Also, I like the fact that the treadmill helps me really hone in on my pace. I pay close attention to how I feel and I can "dial in" to that pace when not on the treadmill b/c I've studied and practiced it so much. And I find that I can go a bit faster outside than on the 'mill, when the weather breaks, which is a nice perk! Just gotta watch the garmin in races and adjust for adrenaline!

And, just tell yourself that if you were running outside in the cold, your body would be in even more shock when it gets to the heat/humidity of florida!

Silver linings....

Morning, Ladies!
Still dealing with the "ick", this bug is kicking my butt. Always a sliver lining, though: I broke my weight loss plateau! YAY! So although I'm a stuffed up hacking cough drop sucking tissue destroying machine for the present, at least I'm lighter, LOL!
So my race this morning was cancelled, trail conditions were too dangerous and the permit was pulled. For the best, because even though I'm sick, I honestly would have tried to go out there and tough it out. They're trying to reschedule for next weekend, but if we get wallopped with a possible Nor'easter mid week (which would be all snow), you can hang that up. We'll see.
I think I'm going to hit the rec center later this afternoon and shoot for some miles on the indoor track. If that goes OK, I'm going to to for a long tomorrow, although my schedule is all messed up as I did 10 last Sat, was going to do 9 today at the race and then 12 next Sat before starting to taper back for the half. Can't believe it's so close!!!
So happy Saturday, and good training to all of you shooting for long distances this weekend. Treadmill or road, miles are miles and the effort will all prove out in just a few short weeks. :)

I don't own a treadmill, don't belong to a gym, so I'm stuck going outside. Honestly, I'm afraid to run much on the treadmill, I don't feel at all in control of my feet and I'm such a klutz, I'm constantly worrying about doing a face plant. I've never watched the weather reports so closely in my entire life as I have in the last few weeks, trying to plan out runs lol. Our neighborhood roads are still snow and ice covered and it's 21 degrees, but I put on my cold gear and my Yak Trax and did 3.75 miles this morning, stopping every time a car went by and getting off the road. So glad I did my 10 miler before the snow hit this week.

It took me almost exactly an hour. Hoping this 16 mile pace in Yak Trax on ice and snow covered roads translates into not getting swept in Florida!

Thanks again for this, we finally got ourselves set with a ressie for Monday the 24th.
I did find it interesting that the kid's menu has healthy side options while the adult's doesn't seem to. So I ordered the kid's pork with double green beans, and we'll just stop for either a port shank or turkey leg "snack" somewhere along the way. Yummo! :)

Good for you for getting out there!! I think your pace will be fine in Florida .. When I went out a couple weeks ago after some snow the sidewalks were still covered in patches of black ice and I kept slowing down to a tip toe to cross them.. Added a minute and a half to my pace compared to my previous long run. Plus I think it takes a little bit to get used to the cold and let your body warm up. Even if it is cold at the race it won't be as cold as what we're used to!
