I need some advice. I looked over today and DD12 has a mustache. She has fair skin and dark hair. So, it is very noticeable. I have fair skin and hair and haven't had a problem in this area. A little waxing at the hair dresser periodically. So, I'm not sure what to have her do.

My SIL shaves her upper lip with a razor daily and says that the "hair will come in faster/rougher" is a wives tale and not true.

What direction should I lead DD? Wax? Shave? Some other Nair like product?

Help me ladies!

I had dark hair on my upper lip when I was younger. I hated it. My mom helped me by either using bleach or waxing. If the hair is not thick then bleaching would be fine. If it is thick & still noticeable after bleaching then go with the wax.

It's not fun to wax because it sure does sting & make your eyes water, but it will make her feel better about herself.

I know bleaching works for some people.

Another option is to look into laser hair removal. Fair skin and dark hair is typically perfect for it. There are some salons and such that do it, but I would get a consult from a dermatolgists. You might need to wait until she is a little older to do it though.

Get the Sally Hansen wax kit. It's about $10 at Ulta and super easy to use. The best one has lavender as the scent. It's kind of messy until you get used to it. The trick is to get it heated enough so that it goes on really thin. I use it on my 13 year old's eyebrows.

I would suggest one of the battery-operated facial hair / eyebrow trimmers that you can buy just about anywhere (Wal-Mart; Bed, Bath & Beyond). I have one that I use for the occasional mustache and facial fuzz that women of my age have to deal with. They work great.

Hmm. I had not thought of that.

Sally Hansen creme hair remover for the face. It's a creme that you let dry and wipe of with a warm damp wash cloth it doesn't hurt at all and removes everything. I couldn't imagine putting hot wax on my face. Ouch!

I think the least traumatizing thing would be bleaching to start off with. Just do it with her at first and read the instructions, because it is still bleach,
If she has thick hair, hair remover creams might not work. They won't for me. The little Sally Hansen type wax kits in the pharmacy also do not work for me.

Bleach. Nothin' like a little chemical burn on your upper lip ladies!

Waxing. Yeah, but first you have to let the fuzz grow out long enough so the wax will be able to adhere to the hairs. Nice to have that bloody upper lip thing going on after the wax is ripped clean off your upper lip!

Threading. As someone else said hurts like bejeebers with the added plus of having to let the hairs get long enough before it can be done.

I have no idea why women are so against shaving. The old wives tales are just that. Shaving is cheap. A gentle soap and you don't end up with a flaming red irritated upper lip. Shaving is easy. All this womanly hocus pokus crap just chaps my butt and all because some beauty *expert* tells us what we're supposed to do and how we're supposed to do it. Bah!

LOL

I've had the same problem (fair skin and dark hair) since I was your daughter's age. Oh the joys of being Italian with fair skin.

I just a Nair upper lip cream. It works fine. I use it every 3 weeks or so. Waxing hurts way too much on my upper lip. I've also used the Sally Hansen creme as well. I have too much hair to bleach it.

Do the waxing, and maybe if she is hitting puberty look to her underarms. The lip will probably only have to be done every 2 months or so.

yes the first will sting a bit - have her take a painkiller before hand if it makes her think it will be better - then have a cold compress available afterwards to immediatlely take the sting out.

Sorry Mom but you will have to be a bit of a guinea pig to find a therapist who is good at thier job as there is a vast difference between unskilled and skilled.

But there are payoffs, and after starting waxing at 15, now that I am urm 4* I have very little underarm hair and it does not hurt to be waxed.

You could try the battery operated razor at Bed Bath. I forget the name of it but it does a good job. However, my DD-13 won't use it because she says I get a shadow, I don't see it and my DH says he doesn't think it's bad. DD got her upper lip waxed once and said it hurt ALOT but she is willing to try it again. Edit - just saw a pp about the bleaching. I will tell DD about that, thanks!

I have had the same issue since i was that age.... I have gone back and forth with bleaching or the nair products, both work fine. Just do it at night before bed, sometimes i would get a little red, but if i used the moisturisers that came with it, i would be fine in the morning. I personally think 12 is to little to go with anything that could be too uncomfortable. shaving is scarey too.... good luck

Waxing. The best for sure. For my eyebrows though, I love to get the threading.

I've done both the waxing an at home hair removal with the Sally stuff. Waxing esp even after yrs of it leaves me very red an swollen for a couple of days so I have to be very careful when I get it done an plan on going straight home an staying there a couple of days.

The Sally stuff left skin very dry an red at 1st not so much now tho usually I can do it at night an be ok the next day might have to follow up an tweeze a few stubborn hairs nothing major.

Waxing seems to have gotten out of hand very pricey to me so usually I Sally the upper lip an between eyes then about every 3 months go get a real waxing on eyebrows that the 1 area I can't seem to do myself very well.

My daughter that just turned 9 has the same problem and about a year ago starting feeling embarrassed about it so we use Avon Skin so Soft Facial hair remover, it works really well. My friends daughter also had this same issue and kids were making fun of her and making her cry about it at age 7, I did not want to see that happen to me daughter.

Do not bleach it. She will just have a white mustache then and trust me- people will notice it. Wax it or get some electrolosis. Yes it hurts a bit but it works better and it is only a few seconds of discomfort. I also would not shave. You can always tell when a woman shaves because there is always stubble.
