Care to let them in on how you pronounce Norfolk?

lol I was thinking about it but decided this is a family board

LOL let's just say that you can always tell who isn't a local by the way they pronounce Norfolk. Non locals put a hard emphasis on the "folk" part. Locals tend to make it sound like a dirty word.

Poquoson means "Large mosquito" in Pamunkey.;) I don't know if thats true, thats what everyone used to say when I lived in the area!

Even though the may flies are bad, it's one of the best places I've ever lived! I don't know what the economy is like. Get a job before you go there just to be sure.

The people are some of the friendliest I've ever met!:sunny:

:D I have a sign over my back door that says "attack mosquito on duty". We DO have a bunch of mosquitos.

It takes a little practice to pronounce it like a local. I've even been known to yell "oh Norfolk" when I'm having a bad day. ;)

CindyGusGus that is where my siblings went to school when we lived there. I was born later in my parents life (they swear I was not an accident I was just born 9months after sea duty;) ) They loved those schools and had no problem transferring to Fairfax County in NOVA one of the best school systems in the country.

My brother was not happy with Chesapeake schools so they moved back to VA Beach. However now he sends them to Cape Henry Pirvate School. The new trend down there (and my sister in law loves to keep up with the trends) Is to hold your kids back in Kindergarten. So you will see a lot of 6 year olds all most 7 in Kindergarten. Crazy I think. I taught Jr. K for 5 years and only really feel that you should hold November birthdays back if the cut off is such. So my poor nephew will go to one pirvate school for Kindergarten and then a Public School for Kindergarten again and then go to Cape Henry Pirvate school for 1st. And he is as tall as a 2nd grader. Whatever!

And if you didn't already love the area already. I have another piece of useless trivia for you. According to some new poll Va Beach is the healthiest place to live and have the most in shape residents!

Pop Daddy I guess no one ever told you that Virginia is for Lover's!!!

Julianne,
What years were your siblings there?? Im a 91 graduate myself. I do agree with the other post about some of the schools in Va Beach could be undesirable but I can swear by Kempsville. It was an awsome district. Again, I am still trying to figure a way back.

BTW LOL on the whole Norfolk pronounce. My mom is from Nebraska and insists on calling it Norfork.

That's okay...I live in Rat's Mouth, FL. :hyper: LOL!

Flies? :earseek: I've been looking at jobs online today. Seems to be a fairly good amount in the work I'm looking for. If all else fails, I can go to a temp agency until I find something permanent. But permanent right off the bat is my goal! My sister lives in Northern VA. She says that from what she's seen up there, companies don't even want to talk to you about a job unless you have an address in the area. :(

I know the feeling, Julianne. My sisters were 2 years apart. Then I came along 5 years later. I never asked my parents if I was an "accident," but my oldest sister told me that I was! So they are 5 and 7 years older than me.

Healthiest place to live? Most in-shape residents? They must be running on the beach! ;) Speaking of Cape Henry, here is DS in front of the lighthouses. :) I want to go back NOW!

I sent e-mail to a friend and told them that I'm moving and will be shooting to do it in the summer. I'll let DS finish out his school year here. But I'm not going to re-register him for next year. That needs to be done in February. Interestingly, I was looking at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel I believe it is in Newport News...their website. I found it very interesting that the tuition is MUCH less than here. Even the registration fees!! I think registration there is about $50 and re-registration about $75. At DS's school it's $250!! :earseek: His tuition is well over $4,000...almost hitting $5,000 a year. And throw in the books, uniforms, etc., etc., etc.! :earseek: Hmmm...a no brainer there! And I was floored when we were there that I spent quite a bit less money at decent restaurants! Like a difference of $2 a plate between here and there! :earseek: I'll have to look further into apartments and homes. So, since I've e-mailed my friend, I guess IT'S OFFICIAL!!!! Woooooooooooooooooo hoooooooooooooooo! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Lol, you crack me up! I saw a dead city rat laying belly up on the side walk the other day, it made me want to puke!:earseek:

Northern VA seems like it's the place for all of the Young, Urban fast paced, professionals. I always feel unsuccessful around my type A relatives who live there.

Southern VA is more laid back. Atleast near Wsmbg. and Yorktown it's a bit slower paced. I also like Norfolk, and VA beach although they are a bit bigger and more urban.

I envy you! I think that you'll love it! :sunny:

LOL! That's pretty disgusting, minnie! :earseek: I would have gotten sick.

I'm looking forward to moving. So how come I'm still apprehensive about it??? I guess it's frightening moving without a definite job. But I'm a student anyway and not working. A slower pace sounds perfect!!! Who will help push me! I need that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Congratulations!

Colleges tend to be cheaper too or so I hear. My sister went to a private college here and all of her friends were from Conneticut, New York, and other northeast states. They said that out of state private school tuition was cheaper than their state colleges

:earseek: I visited The College of William and Mary online. For out of state rates, it's over $600 a class. In state is MUCH more reasonable. So I'll have to put school on hold a year to establish residency. Ouch! That's really something about the state colleges up there.
