A few months ago, I added a copy of Empire of the Sun to my Amazon.com wish list (the book, not the movie). I noticed it was hardcover, but that was about it.

So I receive it as a gift from my mom. My mom always buys all the kids gifts within a certain price range (I don't care, but some people go nuts if someone else got $.50 more in gifts than another). Anyway, later my mom pulls me aside and says, "I hope you don't feel like you didn't get anything this year. But that book was strangely expensive. But it was on your wish list so I got it. Is it a special edition or something?"

I was thrilled with it, but was scratching my head. This book was expensive? I didn't even look at the price. I came home and looked, and the durn book is $40!!!! And I don't even know why! Now take into consideration I am very tired and it's been a busy day, but could someone please check out this book and see if I am missing something??

Above is the Amazon.com link. Could you guys please help me out? Thanks!

I looked at the book on both amazon's and barnes and noble's website. Didn't see anything that jumped out at me to make it $40.

Bump

Still researching and can't figure this one out. I am going to bed now.

I looked at your link this morning and it didn't work for me.

I hope you enjoy the book. Maybe it is priced like college textbooks.

Hmmmm, it's not letting me relink it for some reason. Go to Amazon.com and search for Empire of the Sun (hardcover). It's a solid red book.

It's the publisher, Buccaneer Books. I looked on their website and they have a bunch of good quality reprinted books that are rather pricey. Look at Dostoyevsky books and they're between $40-50. H.G. Wells' The Time Machine is $22 -- and you know that's a short book. Amazon usually discounts their books, but they're charging full price for Buccaneer books and you could get a discount from the publisher's website.

Sounds like your book is a keeper. :goodvibes

(I used to work in a bookstore, so when we got yelled at for the high prices of books, we always pointed our fingers right at the publisher. :rotfl: )

I looked late last night, did not see anything jump at me as to the rather high price, maybe just what the market will bear, or maybe being an older, possibly short in supply book.

Isn't that a very long book? I seem to recall that, anyway. Maybe that's part of the price?
