calling all asthmatics...

Hi everyone!

I just got off of the phone with guest services and I had such a great experience!

I am asthmatic and I have a lot of issues with deodorizers that most hotel rooms use. I called to see if they could put a note on my room reservations that any spray deodorizers should not be used during my stay.
Not only did he put the note on there, but he said he would make a note that they use non-harsh chemicals for cleaning the room.

They do that for me every time we stay I have never had a problem except for the time my next door neighbor was smoking right outside my door. I asked her to stop and she blew smoke at me.
I called the front desk they sent someone right away and we didn't have any more problems

They are great about things like this. You can also ask to have a new air filter put in if you are sensitive to dust ( as my asthmatic son is).

Oh wow... that is great about the air filter.

I didn't know what reaction I would get when I called.
Some hotels are fine about it and other say that they will leave a note...

It is so frustrating and people who don't have asthma have no idea what it is like. I commend Disney on always putting the guest first!

While my daughter is asthmatic smells don't usually bother her. I however am bothered by perfumes and stronger smells. I left some of the gift shops because they had tester perfumes that were being sprayed adn I couldn't breathe at all. I did notice my daughter's asthma was much worse at Disney than it has been in a long time. We used her inhalor almost every 4hrs on the dot the last 3 days. I think it was mostly allergies and the heat but have no idea so be prepared when you go ffor more flareups than normal.

FYI, we are in a big drought down here and there have been lots of brush fires close enough to WDW to bring smoldering smoky areas to parts of the resort area. We went a couple of weekends ago and the MK was fine all day, but the TTC was totally smoky and I was really glad that I had my inhaler, which is something that I had not remembered on earlier trips since becoming "a local."

Please by all means, bring your inhaler and any meds you may need when you do have issues with your lungs. Please do not forget to take your medications properly before coming down. I would like to suggest that you consider checking the Orlando local tv and newspaper websites to make sure that you are as prepared as possible for potentially running into this pollution.

I thought I would be escaping the smoke (we have it here from fires on the coast)...

That is very unfortunate.
I took out the trip insurance. Wonder if I get down there and just can't manage if that covers it if we have to leave?

My asthma is always worse in Disney. But my asthma gets worse with any change in environment. I am also sensitive to smells, humidity, detergents, etc. And I am very very sensitive to dust. I am also allergic to pretty much every flower in existence which is great at Disney. I end up on steroids after every trip to Disney.

It's a different environment than most people are used to and it combines a lot of different possible allergens and sensitivities into one place. It can be very overwhelming to someone with a sensitive respiratory or immune system.

DD10 has environmental allergies which trigger breathing problems (according to the doctor it's not asthma but allergy triggered RAD-like constriction; I'm not 100% sure of the difference but I do know it's 100% allergy triggered and nothing to do with heat or cold or any other environmental influence). The only time it gets really bad at home is when the trees in our area are flowering which means we're just finishing up with our second round of prednisone and a couple different inhalers and she was dangerously close to a ride to the hospital. This is only ever a problem for a couple weeks (if we can keep it under control) to maybe 1.5 months (when it's a really bad year like this year) per year. Besides this, our trips to WDW seem to be the only other time we have to worry. Before we discovered the special cleanings including new air filters, no chemical cleaners, deep cleaning of the room an anything else they can do, she always ended up on heavy meds in order to breathe properly by the time we got home. Now she does much better thanks to the cleaning. February trips do seem to require us to double up on her antihistamines (under doctor's orders) as it seems that something is blooming in FL late February that triggers her breathing problems but the problems aren't nearly as bad since we found out about the cleanings. She doesn't have this problem in hotels anywhere else that we've been; just WDW. I don't know if it's Orlando or something in the rooms or maybe certain foliage they plant at WDW but I do know that there's something about our WDW trips that triggers her allergies. This has happened at different resorts so I don't think it's a plant that is specific to one particular resort. We're really grateful for the special cleaning because WDW is such a great place to vacation with all of our other special needs but we'd have to avoid it if she continued getting sick every trip.
