Last Wednesday night and it was time for our 25th (or maybe more-lost actual count) dinner at California Grill. Reservations were at 6:00 but since we were already in the neighborhood, we checked in at 5:00 on the dot and went right on up--to find that we were the VERY first customers that night. Dosen't sound like something to mention except that almost every prior visit, we had to wait, or stand and wait--sometimes for as long as an hour. So this was nice.
We went right to the bar for dinner where we were well served by Erica and Ray. Ray has been at the CG since it opened and Erica I believe has been there about 8 years. Both were very friendly and their knowledge of the menu and suggestions resulted in my first ever try at sushi.
Once seated we ordered drinks--me an Anchor Steam and Mrs U one of the many excellent merlots. Ordinarily I get one of the wondeful CG flatbreads to start, but in looking over the menu, none really appealed to me. So I gazed down at the sushi list and found one that just has lump crab meat. I casually asked Erica if it was cooked or raw, and she then explained that the sushi wasn't all raw and there were several others that I might like. So after a second Anchor Steam I was ready to go. I ordered the Spicy Kazan Roll and in the spirit of the evening, Mrs U got Yellowfin Tuna Three Ways.
The Kazan roll has shrimp, crab, scallops and tuna--it all seemed at least cooked somewhat and it wasn't raw. With the sauce, it was actually quite tasty and I found that I liked it! Mrs U 's selection did seem to be raw, but the three offerings were quite good--the poki seeming to be the best. Of the two sushi's, I think I made the better selection...
Entrees were traditional CG selections--the Pork tenderloin for me, the Oak fired Filet for her. We've had both multiple times in the past, but they do such a good job with them it's hard to order anything else. The steak seemed to be the highlight of the two--I saw Mrs U cutting her's (done medium) with just a fork.
Desserts were next and we both got something light--the coconut mango panna cotta. Light and delicious, it was a perfect compliment to all that went before. To cap off the evening, we both got a glass of Dows 30 year Tawny Port--smooth!!!!
All that took just about 2 hours and by then, CG was it's usual self, filled with families and kids arriving for dinner so as to see the fireworks. Having seen the fireworks any # of times in the past, we didn't hang around. Just went back to OKW with memories of the excellent service and another fine meal at CG!!
