Last Wednesday night and it was time for our 25th (or maybe more-lost actual count) dinner at California Grill. Reservations were at 6:00 but since we were already in the neighborhood, we checked in at 5:00 on the dot and went right on up--to find that we were the VERY first customers that night. Dosen't sound like something to mention except that almost every prior visit, we had to wait, or stand and wait--sometimes for as long as an hour. So this was nice.
We went right to the bar for dinner where we were well served by Erica and Ray. Ray has been at the CG since it opened and Erica I believe has been there about 8 years. Both were very friendly and their knowledge of the menu and suggestions resulted in my first ever try at sushi.

Once seated we ordered drinks--me an Anchor Steam and Mrs U one of the many excellent merlots. Ordinarily I get one of the wondeful CG flatbreads to start, but in looking over the menu, none really appealed to me. So I gazed down at the sushi list and found one that just has lump crab meat. I casually asked Erica if it was cooked or raw, and she then explained that the sushi wasn't all raw and there were several others that I might like. So after a second Anchor Steam I was ready to go. I ordered the Spicy Kazan Roll and in the spirit of the evening, Mrs U got Yellowfin Tuna Three Ways.

The Kazan roll has shrimp, crab, scallops and tuna--it all seemed at least cooked somewhat and it wasn't raw. With the sauce, it was actually quite tasty and I found that I liked it! Mrs U 's selection did seem to be raw, but the three offerings were quite good--the poki seeming to be the best. Of the two sushi's, I think I made the better selection...

Entrees were traditional CG selections--the Pork tenderloin for me, the Oak fired Filet for her. We've had both multiple times in the past, but they do such a good job with them it's hard to order anything else. The steak seemed to be the highlight of the two--I saw Mrs U cutting her's (done medium) with just a fork.

Desserts were next and we both got something light--the coconut mango panna cotta. Light and delicious, it was a perfect compliment to all that went before. To cap off the evening, we both got a glass of Dows 30 year Tawny Port--smooth!!!!

All that took just about 2 hours and by then, CG was it's usual self, filled with families and kids arriving for dinner so as to see the fireworks. Having seen the fireworks any # of times in the past, we didn't hang around. Just went back to OKW with memories of the excellent service and another fine meal at CG!!

Very nice! The Spicy Kazan Roll is my favorite. I do have "food porn" of it that I had posted. :thumbsup2

I haven't had an entree there for at least 3 visits. I like ordering sushi, flatbreads, soups and appetizers in different combinations, depending on whether I'm solo or with others who want to share the sushi and flatbreads.

I've also ducked out before the fireworks by arriving early.

Uncleromulus, congrats on joining the CG sushi club! The Kazan is great and Mrs Cdtommie orders this every visit (that means 12 Kazan's in the past two years and I'm sure another one when we are there next Wednesday) I try to rotate myself and have had everything except the Snake in the Grass. A couple of sushi rolls and splitting a cheese plate always works for me unless I see something interesting fish wise on the CG menu.

I just love CG! The spicy kazan is my fave, its some of the best sushi Ive had..I cant wait for our ADR in Sept!

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your sushi. I have been having it for years at CG and always loved it. We will be making our 20+ trip to CG in October. California Grill is the one place at WDW that I feel you can still get excellent food and different selections from other WDW restaurants. I had Ostrich when we visited last year and it was excellent.

Around what time would I need to book ADRs to see the fireworks? Also do you believe their menu would be suitable for DD9 who is rather picky?

For fireworks we always try for an hour to and hour and a half befor they are scheduled.

I guess you could look over the menu and see if DD would like anything they offer---

Can u get sushi on the dining plan? My dh and I have ressies there on May 31st and trying to think of what to order. Thinking we might split a sushi and a main course. Any other suggestions?

On the DP yes, as an entree only (no restrictions). On the DDP as an appetizer (except for Yoshi platter and Snake in the Grass) or as an entree (no restrictions).
