California Grill (aka do we try the Sushi?)

sashimi is not good beginner sushi imo :)

first you start with the cooked stuff and get a taste for the seaweed and vinegared rice etc
then you graduate to raw fish in a roll
then you graduate to raw fish ontoppa roll
and then you do sashimi

unless you are not squeamish about such things :)

I'm a weirdo. I started with sashimi and worked my way up to regular rolls. It took me a while to get used to the flavour of therice and the texture of the seaweed.

"spicy" sauce on sushi is usually mayo mixed with sriracha or other chili type sauce. The mayo pretty much cuts the heat of whatever chili sauce they use and it's creamy with just a tad of heat. Sushi flavors are pretty mild in general so it would be kind of a waste to blast your tastebuds with strong heat. I've had onion ring dips that were way spicier than anything I've had on sushi. I do add a bit of wasabi because I like the bite but that is optional.

I love the spicy kazan roll too. It DOES have raw fish in it but if you like raw oysters you might actually like raw fish in sushi... it has a similar fresh and slightly briny taste to it and is not fishy AT ALL, but minus the snot texture of oysters (I live in a place with lots of local oysters lol.) I love raw oysters but don't care for them cooked and I like raw fish in sushi but I like it combined with the other flavors and textures in a roll and am not a fan of it by itself in sashimi (so alas I am not a sushi grand master). Honestly if you are ok with oysters I'd go straight to spicy kazan. no joke. :)

Thanks Lisa :) LoL @ the snot texture of oysters... that's so them!

You do realize y'all are going to have me trying the Kazan roll just out of thread peer pressure, right?

Omg girl you're killing me here with the pic LOL! On a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high)... how spicy is it would you say?

I've eaten sushi my whole life, and really enjoy it. California rolls are fun and yummy, but not really sushi, LOL!

I'd suggest if you really want to try some and get advice, go to Wolfgang Puck's and sit at the sushi counter (I think they have one there). Better yet, Kimono's at the Swan has a sushi counter. There the person preparing it can make suggestions as to what's fresh or good. Kimono's is very good sushi. My son (born in Hawaii, so he's eaten it his whole life) is a sushi freak, and when the kids were little I used to order carry out from there when we'd stay at the Swan or Dolphin so they could eat in their jammies (daughter hates fish other than squid, go figure). I'd run down and pick it up so they could have an early evening.

Don't be put off by sashimi, but honestly I like a bit of rice.

If you like fish and rice, you'll like sushi!

Thanks HM for your recs, appreciate them! The thing is, the dinner res is at California Grill.. so I need to pick something off their menu. I have no desire to seek out sushi on my own (being a total newbie and all lol!) I don't like fish or rice, so this is going to be quite the challenge for me. I will say that I'm going to pass your recs about WP's and the Swan to my daughter and her family.. they love sushi!

If you aren't a fan of fish or rice, then I'm not sure if you'll be happy ordering sushi. I'm sure there are some great things to try for your dinner! Or, you can get a roll and see how you like it! My daughter used to love California rolls when she was a baby, then decided she didn't like them anymore. She does like tamago, or egg sushi, which is an omelette slice on rice.

I'm trying to be adventurous lol! :) Actually, I promised myself I'd give it a try so.. hence.. this thread. Right now I'm leaning toward the California roll or maybe (maaaaybe) the Kazan.

I'm so the opposite of you! I eat anything. Went to Korea with my husband (he is Korean and was born there) and I ate things he wouldn't eat!

You are fine with the rolls. They're just rice with ingredients inside. I eat rice weekly (duh) and seaweed is delicious! I love spicy things too, so if I get a California roll I ask for spicy sauce, LOL.

I think you'll enjoy a California roll! Just make sure to have other food for dinner, in case you don't. But what a fun place to try something new!

I would say that I do like spicy foods and I top out at about a 6 or a 7. I will order "medium" wings, I put sriracha on my eggs, but there are many things that are also way too hot for me. I would put it about a 3, nowhere near the top of my range but not completely mild either.

I can eat raw oysters with the best of them but I don't think I'm ready for sashimi (love your photo tho!)

That's funny...you couldn't pay me to eat raw oysters, but I'm all over raw fish. Salmon, which I think it vile when cooked, is one of my favorite things to eat raw. It tastes completely different. DH won't eat traditional sushi, but he did enjoy the pork belly "sushi" last time we were at Cali Grill...

I love your sense of adventure! :) I've always wanted to taste kimchi (just a little bit lol!)

Great comparison Lisa, thanks! I told my hubby "you know.. I'm going to have to try the Kazan roll so I can tell the girls on the disboard how it was lol!" ;)

Nice photo! :) I've got a lot to think about lol :D

Not sure if it's on room service - but can you order rolls for carry out?

PS: Ziggy I love kimchee. Got a container in my fridge now. If you have a local Korean grocery store you can get some and try it! But, leave it out for day or two and then put it in the fridge. It's better if it ferments more. Like sauerkraut (I'm half German) but spicy a bit.

Thanks for the tips HM! :) It's definitely on my list of things to try

Awesome thread..Lots of great info in here...We'll be making our 1st trip to CG in Nov. So definitely this is way at the top of our menu....My son is going to freak when he sees the Pork Belly Sushi....

Also, besides the Poly and/or WP , they also have great stuff/Sushi over @ TOKYO Dining, in EPCOT.... Our family devoured everything we got, & it was DELISH!!! Just some food for thought--->:teeth: Pun Intended.

I'm going to be in the minority here. I thought the sushi was awful. Had dragon and spicy kazan rolls. They were both sticky and ice cold and tasted as though they were pre-made and put in the refrigerator. When we were walking out, that was confirmed when we actually saw all the pre-made rolls behind the glass at the sushi bar. If you are a regular sushi eater and enjoy really good sushi places at home, you won't be impressed. Especially at $26 a roll.
