Hi. I'm looking for plane tickets for our July cruise and I don't know how long we should allow to get from the ship to the airport. Also, we've never flown through LAX and I don't know how long it takes to get through the lines there.

Does anyone know the time it takes to get from the port to LAX on a saturday? Would an 11 a.m. flight be too early on debarkment day (is that the right term??) I don't want to cut it too close!!

Thanks for any advise!

I asked DCL and was told not to book a flight prior to 12:30PM. Our flight is at 12:45PM to fly home.

Okay, thanks for your help. I'm so glad I didn't buy those tickets before asking, 11 am would be way too early. Thanks again!

Candlestix - are you on the July 2nd or July 9th cruise? We are on the July 2nd. We are flying in the day before. Have you gone over to the cruise meets thread?

Just to let you know that LAX is atleast an hour away without traffic. I live in California and I thought we would be close once we past the airport but it ended up being atleast 45 mins to the pier to catch RCCL. I wouldn't fly into Long Beach or Orange County unless the price was alot cheaper, because from LAX it is a straight shot and it is hard to get lost. Hope this helps everyone!!!

I called DCL with the same question. I plan to book an 11:55 am departure from LAX on Saturday 6 August. The rep told me that they recommend flights no earlier than 12:30 pm but I would "be fine" with an 11:55 am departure. We can disembark at 8:30 am right?

I have cruised before and yes you can disembark at 8:30am; however, on past cruises you disembark in groups. On my last cruise I was one of the first groups off and still had to wait in a long line for immagration. The immagration is nothing like compared to Florida there are only two lines one for birth certificate holders the other for passport holders. The wait was atleast 45 minutes. Then you have to claim your luggage. Then with get to your taxi or car and drive to LAX which is 45 minutes at least away. LAX is VERY busy with long lines inside and outside. I personally think you would be pushing it with a 11:30 flight. I would be nervous the whole morning.

I'd allow an hour just because traffic can be unpredictable.
I've done the LAX to Long Beach drive in 20 minutes at the speed limit with light traffic, it's about 27 miles.
And I've done the LAX to Disneyland drive in 30 minutes, that's 40 miles, but again with light traffic.
But in LA traffic seems to stop for no reason, so I always allow double what I think the actual driving time is.

I've lived all over LA/Orange and Ventura county 40+ years and would NOT risk a flight prior to 12 noon unless you knew you couls stand by for a couple of later flights. Morning traffic winds down after 9AM - but there is a car-pool lane for much of the way so traffic (if existing) can be evaded somewhat by your cabbie or transport.

But the real variable is when you get to LAX. Heaven help you if you're flying Southwest as almost every time I travel I see the
longest check in lines on the sidewalk for those poor folks. Some airlines make you carry your bags from the check-in counter to a x-ray station (they don't have the baggage flow worked out yet - dumb). Plus inside you may encounter lengthy security lines THEN have considerable walks to get to your jet gate. Remember - you have about a one hour cut-off to check your bags in otherwise you can't board the flight!

NOw.... if you know what you're doing then you CAN swing tight connections and transit into LAX. I know where I like to park and in a pinch I don't even use their courtesy shuttles but hop a cab! Hey, if I'm at risk of missing a flight and a cab is ready but I have to wait 10-15 minutes for the next shuttle ... I drop $5 and take the cab - NOW!. Plus I know all the driving ins and outs .... generally you follow the cabs to see how they choose to get in buy not necessarily OUT.

If you CAN fly through Long Beach (jet blue and AA I think) then I've heard it is a DREAM COME TRUE compared to LAX. Frankly, I look for opportunities to fly out of regionals compared to LAX... as I will give up connections for convenience and a little escape from the rat race environment. I have used Oxnard, Burbank and even Santa Barbara. However, you are unlikely to consider anything except Long Beach or possibly John Wayne (Santa Ana). Anything else is not a convenient alternative from the port - except possibly Burbank.

For transportation - a super shuttle is a good idea - probably pretty cheap too. OR, renting a car can be dirt cheap too. My brother is visiting in March of this year - not using a weekend and has a Compact rental from Thrifty for $14 a day! Add taxes and such, gas and go - it's a flaming bargain! Of course, I imagine drop off and pickup at LOng Beach may pose certain limitiations and or complications.

Buses or light rail DO NOT present any conveniences that I know of.. For that matter there is NO light rail between port and LAX. I think cabs are the priciest/most convenient and least comfortable. In a city this size I imagine you could probably find a tolerably priced limo or towncar for a little less than Disney transfers if your party has at least 3 or 4. It's such a short ride between the 2 points.

AT any rate, I hope my dribble is of some help to you and any others who are curious. :earsboy:
