Sam's has the cheapest price for decorated cakes, but I live an hour away from the store. We are having a party on Sat. If I picked up the cake on Thursday, would it be too dried out by Saturday? I can get a full sheet size cake for the same price as half sheet closer to home. But I want it to taste good, too:) I have a dentist appt on Thursday and will be picking up other supplies for the party then.

I think that if you wrap the bakery box plastic wrap, and keep it in the fridge (or better yet a freezer) it should be fine.

Enjoy your party!

:goodvibes

It will be fine! If it doesn't come tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, do that yourself when you get home and it will be totally fine 2 days later. I would put it in the refrigerator if you can, but wouldn't do the freezer since it's only 2 days away.

Thanks, I want a bargain, but want it to taste good, too. I am not sure if I will have room in the fridge for a cake that big with other party stuff. Not sure about freezer either.

It's actually much better to store in the freezer if you can - a couple of professional baker friends have told me to avoid putting cake in the fridge if possible. For one day, keep it on the counter and longer than that in the freezer (depending on size, it won't take more that a few hours to thaw).

If you don't have room in the freezer, I'd wrap it and keep it on the counter.

I'd worry about the frosting with it being in the freezer. I know storing the cake itself in the freezer is what all cake bakers do, but I'd worry about the frosting either absorbing odors or changing to a weird texture when thawing out.

I've never had an issue with it - I store iced cupcakes in my freezer all the time and the icing has never come out weird (in smell/taste or texture). Especially when it's only frozen for a couple of days.

Go ahead and store it in the freezer. Cakes at the big warehouse clubs are not bakes there- they actually come in iced, filled and frozen. They get defrosted and decorated in the store when you order them. It will taste fine when defrosted.

I would not freeze it , to me it changes the frosting .
I bake and decorate cakes and I have frozen the cake but I dont it frosted . Every time I have tried that the icing was odd . With that being said I make all my frosting and maybe the stuff they use has stuff in it to prevent the texture change .

I have had Sams cakes before and they were moist and tasted good ( to me bettter then other store bought cake . It was good enough for me to ask where it came from LOL)

ENJOY !

I would not freeze it. Just wrap tightly with plastic as already stated. I really like Walmart's cakes so I am sure Sam's will be equally as yummy.

I have been a professional cake decorator for over 20 years and I was a bakery manager at our local Sam's Club for 7. The cake will be fine on the counter or table as long as you don't get the whipped cream frosting. The icing will keep the cake moist. Putting it in the refrigerator will actually dry it out, and if you put it in the freezer, the condensation when it thaws will cause the colors and decoration to run. Our Sam's bakery did get our cakes in frozen, but we iced them there. It's up to the manager whether to order them pre iced or not. I never did, they were much more expensive that way and took forever to thaw (because of the condensation) before we could decorate them.

Yep, I ordered one from Sam's and picked it up Friday for a party Sunday. I asked when I ordered and the bakery worker told me that if I was storing it on the counter to get the regular icing, not the whipped. I did what he suggested and the cake was perfectly fine and moist on Sunday afternoon when we served it.

Thank you everyone! I did call today and they told me the same thing, just to order the buttercream icing instead of the whipped and that it would be fine. So glad you talked me into ordering. Without this board, I probably would have decided it wouldn't work!
Thanks again.
