Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

Must add, Iʻm not a cake person. The cake is ok, pretty good. Craving the raspberry champagne and would pick it over my usual fave cheesecake. I ate the monstrous rich millionaire ʻsliceʻ of cake over 3 sittings-at the restaurant, leftover snack and added to my breakfast.

As I mentioned about few weeks ago, I had a few reservations actually scheduled during my trip the last week of January. I meant to post a review earlier but am finally getting to it! I stayed at BWV so CBS was convenient. I had 3 breakfasts, one dinner, and I also did the Afternoon Tea. The atmosphere and decor were beautiful and the servers, for the most part, were very pleasant.

The breakfasts were probably the best meals that I had here. I ordered the Ham, Rosemary, and Goat cheese Quiche for my first breakfast and it was delicious. However, it was not warm enough. This will become a common experience for me with most of the meals I had here. The server for this first meal seemed more inexperienced than any of the ones I had for my other meals and she did not return to follow-up for awhile, so I had eaten most of it by the time she returned. The same was the case with the tea which was also not warm enough. I ordered the Challah Orange French Toast another morning for breakfast and it was excellent. And, then later in the week, I ordered the the Classic Eggs Benedict which was way, way, way too salty and I have never ever had eggs benedict be anywhere near this salty. When the server returned, I told him and he apparently mentioned it to the chef. He offered to replace it but obviously the sauce was pre-made and would have been the same. Later, when I was getting ready to pay, the server said the chef told him an error had been made in the sauce preparation and it was indeed way too salty. They hopefully discarded the rest of that batch!. But, they only discounted that part of the meal 25%. I will say that the last 2 breakfasts were warm enough, probably because I emphasized this request in my orders.

I also had one dinner there and ordered the Chicken Velvet Soup w/ a half baguette and the Chicken Piccata. The soup, as others have commented, was one of the best soups I have ever had. I did request that they heat it up more, though. The Chicken Piccata had "OK" flavor, though I've had much better, but was way overdone and I had to request a steak knife to cut it. I took most back to my room. After this meal, I canceled any future reservations I had.

Earlier in the week, I had the Afternoon Tea. I enjoyed the relaxing time spent in the lovely decorated room, which was in one of the rooms outside of the main dining room. The service was excellent and very attentive. For my tea choice, I ordered the Anichai, and requested that it be hot and steeped enough since I prefer a bold tea flavor. What I received was perfect and the server said this is how she always prepares tea, and mentioned that the server that I had for my first breakfast apparently did not prepare that tea properly. Later during the tea, I requested to switch to the mint tea (Menthe Poivree) and this was very refreshing, as well. The first food serving was the Orange Cranberry Scone, which was probably the best scone I have ever had! I wish they offered these for purchase at their shop but they don't; however, I believe they do at their Indiana shops. This is where the quality experience ended for me, though. The finger sandwiches were really tasteless and bland. And, the desserts , except for the excellent chocolate cupcake which they said was a takeoff on Gwendolyn's Famous Earl's Court Chocolate Cake, were too sweet and not, in my opinion, very unique or tasty. These included the French Macaron, Lemon Bar, Raspberry Jam Crumble Bar, Chocolate Truffle, & Magic Bar (this one was OK but hard as a rock and tiny). I took these back to the room to try later but ended up throwing then out after tasting them.

Just wanted to mention that I used to have tea at the Grand Floridian Gardenview Tea Room once or twice on every trip and I always LOVED it. Never had a complaint about any of the food or teas. And, the last time I had tea there, I paid $35 before tax or tip, so the quality and price of the CBS Afternoon Tea does not compare in any way to my previous awesome experiences at at GF. Sure wish it would open again, although I'm sure the prices would likely be much higher than they were previously!

During the week I was at WDW in January, I did order the Millionaire Cake at the Shoppe, and I did not like the frosting or filling which did not seem to add anything to the mediocre cake. I'm a chocolate lover so this was disappointing. I also had the Raspberry Champagne Cake which I actually enjoyed for its lightness and flavor. Had the Marie Antoinette macaron which was OK, though the buttercream was bland and excessive IMO.

Despite what were rather variable / ambivalent experiences at CBS, I would probably return on a future trip for either breakfast, or lunch for soup, and try a new dessert but probably not more than once per trip. I did enjoy the beautiful, relaxing atmosphere, but this didn't make it worth the prices vs. food quality.

Thank you so much for this review. This as well as others have been so helpful as I decide which experience to have at CBS. I've decided against the tea but do plan on lunch. I'm really not sure which cake to try but it seams the millionaire and the champagne raspberry seem to be the best ones so will try these in April.

None of them are really for Disney Hotel restaurants or theme park purchases, are they? Mostly just restaurants in Downtown Disney?

The book is a Disney World guide so there are no coupons for Downtown Disney which is in Disneyland.

Whatever, Disney Springs. Old habits die hard.

Do they ever! :D
At least you didn't refer to it as Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village (what us old timers used to call it). :rotfl2:

They all sound simply delicious!

The angel hair pasta looks like the perfect thing before a runDisney race!

I had breakfast again over Princess weekend, seated in the main dining area this time. I took a friend and her mom and they both loved it, this is easily my favorite breakfast spot at WDW right now. I got the same thing again, the Eggs Any Style ($16.99) and Rose Cappuccino ($7.99). Both as delicious as when I had them over Thanksgiving. They actually added the arugula salad to the breakfast plate, which was not included back in November. This is a very hearty portion and a good value in my opinion, especially with egg prices :hyper: Best bacon on property (Topolinos is close though) for those who like thick sliced crispy bacon. Love the (free) sourdough option for toast.

For comparison, here are some recent breakfasts I've had at other Disney restaurants.

Ale & Compass, American Breakfast ($17.00) - I swapped scrambled eggs for over easy which the server seemed a bit hesitant to do, and warned me they do not have toast lol. This was pretty awful all around, barely saved by the lukewarm waffles. You're better off with a resort bounty platter.

Steakhouse 71, American ($17.00) - Far better than A&C, bacon was almost crispy, but the darn potato hash that Disney seems to be switching to. Give me real hash browns, cheapskates!!!

All that to say, Cake Bake's version of the "American" breakfast is by far the best in my book :thumbsup2

Just back from WDW, went to the Cake Bake Shop Bakery three times for snacks & merch, did dinner at The Cake Shop once.

Bakery:
-Went for the first time right before Epcot rope drop because I had heard their iced coffees were some of the best on property. Had a coconut iced latte, absolutely adored it. Lovely, light, not terribly sweet. Ranks above a Joffrey's iced latte for me, but Gideon's PB cold brew is still my favorite cup of coffee on property.
-Went back that evening with the family for some sweet treats to take back to the room after dinner at Boardwalk. We got a walnut brownie, orange zest white chocolate macadamia nut cookie, and magic bar. Personally liked the brownie the best, everyone else thought it was just okay. Did not try the macadamia nut cookie, dad said it was good but maybe not much better than a typical Disney cookie. Magic bar was my personal pick, found it very dense and oily and it did not hold up well the next day. All in all, just wasn't impressed with the baked goods.
-Went back for the last time after dinner just for merch, lol. I fell in love with the "Brulee dragon storyline" and had to have a stuffed Brulee, keychain, and a crewneck sweater with him on it. They got me! Merch was also expensive but I really did love the majority of it, everything was whimsical & cute and I thought the adult merch was subtle without sacrificing any of that playfulness.

Restaurant:
-Reservation system maybe not the most reliable in the world? Went to check in for our dining reservation about 20 minutes early (made through Disney, not OpenTable) and it looked like the hostess was having trouble finding our reservation. She tried to be subtle about it but ended up asking for more information and basically making a new reservation on the spot for the same time slot. This was absolutely not an issue, just something I observed and wondered how it could be handled in busier seasons.
-I can (almost) understand why it took a million years to turn ESPN club into CBS. The space is undeniably gorgeous in every corner. We were seated in the room next to the "main" dining room but could see the carousel from where we were. I wish we took the time to walk around the restaurant a little bit.
-Every CM we encountered was so lovely. A large part of my job is about making my company's Customer Experience as bespoke and personalized as possible, so I observe & think about service probably more than the average person does and I really enjoyed the service at CBS. Our own waitress couldn't have been kinder and was extremely attentive but I was getting emotional watching the waitress taking care of the table with younger children nearby. She spent a lot of time playing with one of the boys' action figures with him and just being silly & fun without being disruptive to the restaurant. Cake Bake Shop has this character named Brulee, the dragon who sprinkles pixie dust over all of the baked goods and breathes the fire that lights birthday candles, and it was so cute watching the kids at the table paying such close attention to her while she told the story and put glitter in the birthday girl's hands so she could blow out the candles.
-Black Swann: This was their take on an espresso martini, this was very good and I loved that there was a hint of chocolate in it. Nothing super remarkable about it imo. I think Raglan Road's Irish Espresso Martini is still my favorite on property but this one beat out the mascarpone foam espresso martini at Narcoossee's.
-Chicken Velvet Souppe: This was the best thing I had at Walt Disney World this week. I ordered this somewhat on a whim as an appetizer and I should have ordered this and half a sandwich for my dinner instead. Good lord, I need to find Gwendolyn's recipe for this immediately. Creamy, hearty, and perfect for the colder weather we had at WDW last week... I will dream about this soup forever. You must get this if you eat at CBS!!!
-New Orleans Shrimp Po' Boy: This was also very good but did not live up to the Chicken Velvet Souppe. It is a very hearty sandwich with a lot going on. The bread that they import from NOLA was incredible and the fried shrimp had a very light, crisp batter on it that I really liked. It was just a very heavy meal and again, if I could do this evening over again, I probably would have gotten the Chicken Velvet Souppe and half of the chicken salad sandwich as my main so I could save room for cake. The truffle pommes frites were also incredible, everyone at my table stole some from me!
-Millionaire Cake: My new favorite cake on property and it isn't even close. It just had that perfect balance between the chocolate cake, ganache, caramel, shortbread, and buttercream. I do love Gideon's cake slices, too, but there was just something magical here between the high-quality ingredients and how perfectly it was executed. I'm really looking forward to trying more of her cake slices when I come back to the Boardwalk for an evening this August. Had this boxed to-go since we were all full from dinner so the picture is not the best!

All in all, I really adored the Cake Bake Shop. The Bakery offerings other than cake were not anything to write home about, but dinner at the Restaurant was my favorite meal of the week. Everything about the story lining, florals, and decor makes it truly one of those magical experiences that brought out the little girl inside of me who loved to dress up and pretend to be a princess. Maybe it's not for everybody, but it was a dream come true for me and I hope I'll be back soon!

Thanks for the review! Question, how many in your party and in what room were you seated? I’m definitely going there to try the the Chicken Vemvet Soup!

Four adults! I unfortunately don't know the difference between the Garden View, Lavender, or Champagne rooms, but I can describe where we were located if that helps -- we were in the little porch looking area off to the left of the host stand when you walk inside the restaurant. Thin hallway with views of the boardwalk on one side and a view of the Rose Crown Ring on the other side!

That's the Garden View room.

Thank you for this lovely review. We were staying at BWV when it opened and loved the coffee (baked items were ok, the Marie Antoinette cookie was awesome). Your review makes me want to visit Cake Bake on our June trip. But! I changed our BWV reservation to Poly last month (hope right decision lol). Maybe a coconut latte and a slice of cake will fit in.

Also you looked lovely in your dress :) Thanks for the review.

CBS is definitely worth a trip for coffee and cake! You are going to love Poly, have not stayed at BWV yet but have a reservation for our first ever stay at Boardwalk in August when we come off of our cruise. We ate at the new Wailulu Bar & Grill at the Poly tower last week and loved it, definitely recommend for a quick lunch/dinner in between a Magic Kingdom day! Thank you so much for the compliment on my dress, it's from Selkie!

I think the chicken velvet soup is a take on the soup they served at the tea room at L.S. Ayres in IN, many years ago before they were shuttered. It might even be the same recipe I’m not for sure. I agree it is very good!!
