Aloha,

I was wondering if anybody knew if Cafe Orleans can make vegetarian crepes? I see on the menu that they have chicken gumbo and a seafood crepe, and do have vegetarian entrees. But DH, who is vegetarian, loves crepes. Wonder if I'd need to call ahead for this one, or if the chef would be able to do something at ordering time?

Mahalo!

I don't know about the vegetarian crepes but I would imagine they could figure something out. They are usually very accomodating.
DH and I had the ratatouille (which is vegetarian) last time we were there. It was sooo good we went back the next day for more.

OMG the Ratatouille is delish!!!!! I highly highly recommend it!!

If he's a strict vegetarian (as in no lard/etc.) then I'd definitely call in advance. I believe the chefs tend to be very accommodating (as FourM's said)--but sometimes they need to make special arrangements in advance, and it's not impossible that the crepes (or their cookingsurface) might have contact with forbidden animal products.

If he just doesn't eat meat, they might be able to come up with something on the fly, but I think calling in advance is still best. (Unless he'd be pretty happy eating the ratatouille as a backup. :) )

I agree with the previous posters - the Rattatouille is great! I ate it 3 days of our 6 day trip :-) It might be a good substitute.

Mahalo for the replies. The rattatouille sounds good, but DH isn't much into squash or onions, and this dish seems to be full of them. I will call and ask if they're willing to make veggie crepes. If all else fails, those dessert crepes look pretty yummy.

Do pommes frittes or beignets qualify as vegetarian? They are so good too!

Probably depends on what they use to cook them in. Lard, nope. Vegetable oil, yes.

But it doesn't matter. They're fried and fried food doesn't set well with any of us.

Well FTR I'm not either (well I like raw onion but not really cooked because they get too mushy) but man, I loooooooved it!!! I tried it because I'd read here how very good it was, I mentioned I was nervous to the server, she said it was delish but if I didn't like it I could try something else and they wouldn't charge me for the Ratatouille. They may not do that with everyone but it's worth a try....

Aloha!

In case anybody cares, I got my answer (re: will Cafe Orleans do vegetarian crepes?). When I called to make our reservations, I asked about it and was forwarded to the chef at Cafe Orleans. He was very nice and said that there were a couple options: we could either have the veggie gumbo used as filling for the crepe, or they could do one of the regular crepes without the meat (chicken or seafood). Thought that was very nice an accomodating of them. He did mention that dairy and eggs were used, which isn't a problem for us.

That is so great that you got to talk with their chef, that they will do something different for you (I'm not actually surprised, after an hour long talk with Chef Chris once), and that you let us know the answer! :goodvibes

I know it's not helpful to you, hula, b/c you don't eat fried foods, but for the one that asked about the beignets etc...when I talked with Chef Chris, we talked of their food philosophy. And their philosophy is that they want to accomodate as many people as possible with one dish. So they aren't going to use meat-based oil in something like that, because doing so would make vegetarians and a few religions unable to eat the foods. That means fewer people ordering, and fewer people happy. So the Mexican rice and the beans at the Mexican places there are made with vegetable oil, NOT lard, so they can make as many people happy as possible. It's a lovely philosophy!

They also have ingredient lists pretty much everywhere. The only problem I've had with finding an ingredient list is for that silly Celebrate birthday cake thing....they wanted to be the gatekeepers for finding out what was in it, and then it took AGES to get ahold of the bakery (they are made in their newish bakery area which isn't in either park), and then they gave me questionable info...like, the cake is sugar free, which is just SO unlikely (especially since it's geared for little kids, and most people don't use artificial sweeteners with little kids unless there are serious reasons)...that I just didn't order one.

But everywhere else, getting the ingredients is NOT a problem.

And now I'm drooling for the veggie gumbo at Royal Street Veranda (and I didn't even know you could get the veggie gumbo at Cafe Orleans!).

I was very impressed and felt pretty important, even though I'm sure the chef gets plenty of calls like mine. He even went to list other items that are vegetarian and others that could be made vegetarian. He made a point to say where milk or eggs were used in case DH is vegan (he isn't).

You're right in that DH and I can't handle fried foods, but DS will be with us and he's probably love the beignets. That's also really good to know, in general as we'll probably eat at the Mexican restaurant at some point.

That is bizarre and making those cakes sugar free doesn't make sense and would probably be icky for kids. But good to know, as I'm sure lots of people have food allergies.

But everywhere else, getting the ingredients is NOT a problem.

My bad. I actually meant veggie rattatouille can be used as filler in the crepes. That also sounds good, but sorry if I mislead you!

Just an update and a review in case anybody cares. :-)

We made our visit to DLR and Cafe Orleans over the weekend (was there 5/7 & 5/8). Our server couldn't be bothered to put on a smile and at first wasn't going to let DH order the crepes vegetarian. I mentioned that I called earlier to check and the chef said it was possible. She sighed and said she would check, then later came back and told him they would do it. He was served the vegetarian ratatouille wrapped inside a crepe. It was atop a bed of more of the ratatouille and some baby red potatoes. DH really liked it.

I ordered the regular veggie ratatouille. Can't say that I loved the sauce (it was a little on the spicey side for me. But I really liked the corn cakes that came with it.

Our party also ordered a basket of the pommes frittes to share. They were okay, but not liking fried foods, they just seemed like garlic fries to me.

We sat out on the patio and the day was beautiful so that was nice. Wish our server had been more cheerful (maybe she was having a long day). We had an enjoyable meal nevertheless.

Mahalo!

Thank you! I'm always looking for vegetarian options. Sounds yummy!
