HELP - We are on the repo cruise in August and will be doing the Chileno snorkel. How cold is the water? Do I need to pack my wetsuit and one for my DD (7) or do you think a Lycra skin or Thirt will be OK? How cold is it?

We were there in early June...and the boat operator said "I won't lie to you, the water isn't chilly.....it's FREEZING!"
It was one of those "YEOW!" screams when we first jumped in, but after a minute or two, we were fine. With no wetsuit at all.
What I don't know, is if it has gotten any warmer now that it is July.....

We just got back from 7-night West Coast today. I can't help you with water temp in Cabo because our kayak/snorkel tour was cancelled due to high wind and waves. I heard somewhere that the water temp was about 74, but not sure if that's right.

The water in Mazatlan was wonderful though. We went to Stone Island and spent the day on the beach. Jellyfish weren't too bad--we saw a few on the beach and I heard there were a couple of stings, but I didn't really see them in the water and no one in our group got stung.

Also, the last day at sea (Friday) was freezing all day long. We couldn't even really go up on deck for more than a few minutes with the wind and overcast skies. The first day at sea was cool, too, but not as bad as the last one. Bring a sweater or light jacket. Weather in Mexico was hot and humid, but with enough of a breeze to be okay.

Finally, if you can do it, a highlight (for me, anyway) was getting up really early on Tuesday (I think??) and watching the ship pull into Puerto Vallarta from Topsiders. PV is beautiful before the sun rises, with the lights and hills. (Not so great looking in the daylight though. JMO.)

Have fun!

Thanks for the info. I am so sorry to hear about your weather. One would think at his time of year the weather would be decent, although southern CA is know for their June gloom.

I am starting to hear more and more about Jelly Fish. Is this normal for the Mexican Riviera? I am getting concerned about our snorkel trip :earseek:

Thanks for the tip in PV but we will not be stopping there. We only go to Cabo and Acapulco then through the canal  and on to Curacao pirate: and then Castaway Cay. ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo

Hey...we are on that snorkel trip too! I have the same concerns you do. I have a 9 year old son, and 6 year old daughter. My parents will be with us too. My mom has convinced me that even if we don't go in and snorkel that the boat ride will be worth the trip. She has researched it and says the catamaran is new and clean and the ride is great. I hear the snorkeling is better in curacao, but, we booked the day at the beach. We'll see you in August!

You are right. I have done the same research and the boat sounds awsome.
My Mom is going to enjoy the boat ride and the Margaritas.

I emailed the company and they said the water in late August is warm so no worries about the wetsuit. I did ask them about the Jelly Fish and they said: "Sometimes we have small jellyfish in our waters. We have never cancelled a trip due to jellyfish in the water. It is only a problem if you are allergic. I swim almost everyday and have only been stung 2 times in the past 5 years. " Not sure if we are allergic but I have a shorty Lycra suit for daughter and I also heard about SafeSea whish is a Jelly Fish repellant with sunscreen. (Available at Drugstore.com or amazon.com) One more thing to add to my must buy and pack list. See you in August. 40 more days

Same concerns here, my 2 DD's (6 and almost 15) and I are also on this excursion and I am not much of a water baby (actually I'm a big baby when it comes to chilly water :cold: ). I also dont fancy the jelly fish too much since getting stung in Hawaii last summer pretty much sucked! Anyway, hopefully the water will warm the jellies will leave and we will have an amazing adventure, otherwise Im going to the beach with the rest of my family!

take care
Pauline

We tried the Cabo Snorkel trip on the Westward Repo. Water was freezing (never been in such cold water in all my life) and the water clarity was disapointing (I'm used to what you "feel" and see in the Carribbian, and DW was stung by a jelly fish.

But as others have said, the boat ride was quite nice. A little chilly with the wind, so if the weather feels cool in the moring at all, try to take a little something to keep you warm.
