Sounds like ABC is practically blackmailingCablevision (whom I have no love for. Worked for them for years). If Cablevision doesn't pony up the dough, they will lose the channel and likely MANY customers (including my parents, sisters, and large extended family). If they pay and hike up rates, they lose customers anyway.

Yes, it went off exactly at midnight. They were showing a rerun of Lost, when suddenly a cryptic "Cablevision has BETRAYED YOU - First it was HGTV and Food Network - Now You've Lost ABC" title card came across the screen and it went to black.

In fact, all of the network channels went out for about 15 minutes. Now everything is back except ABC, which is now showing Cablevision's cry for help.

I don't even care who's right or wrong, because whoever wins, we will lose. And now they've screwed up my Oscar party tomorrow night too.

Both sides, WABC-TV and Cablevision, are doing what they're supposed to be doing -- each one looking out for their overriding objectives. Trying to cast either one as evil, in this, is missing the point. Neither company is a charity. Neither company is obligated to castrate its own ability to best serve its owners' best interests, and indeed it would be irresponsible for them to do so.

Television is a business. Business is all about creating value and then charging consumers for that value. In the case of WABC-TV, Cablevision is consuming the value that they produce, and so it makes sense that they're going to try to get Cablevision to pay for that value. And the law explicitly allows for this... it isn't an oversight or mistake. Retransmission consent is a specific portion of the law, codified in 1996.

I got tired of Cablevisions prices years ago and switched to DirectTV now Verizon which we love.

I believe Verizon and DirecTV both have already signed Retransmission Consent agreements with Disney for its O&O stations, such as WABC-TV. I'm not sure about that though; if they haven't yet, they surely would soon. Generally, though, companies like Verizon and DirecTV don't hold to as hard of a line as companies like Cablevision and Time Warner Cable. Verizon and DirecTV seem to look at it much more so as a cost of offering a "premium" subscription television service, which they'll readily just pass-along to their subscribers, while Cablevision and Time Warner Cable have a much larger base of the lower-end customers, who won't as readily be willing to pay more.

Already went to Best Buy, they were out of rabbit ears.

I mean why pull the Network that has the top rated shows. (I know I should be donning a flame suit) They could've easily pulled all the Disney channels and the ESPNs.

I was fine with the possibility of no Oscars for the Writers Strike. But this is f---ing crazy. I mean really, Verizon can't get here for a few days, and I'm going to be pissed as hell if I can't watch TV most nights this week.
