Cable modem or DSL?

Currently we have cable modem and like it. I tested it at about 1.7 to 2 mb (is that the right term mb? lol). Anyway, I know it can be faster, but the test says this is what mine runs at typically.

Our phone company says we can get DSL with a package (includes satellite tv and our phone line) and it would give us a big savings each month compared to what we pay now for cable, cable modem, phone.

I'm afraid to make a switch though b/c I have heard dsl can be much slower. Is it slower than 1.7 or 2.0 (mb??). ? Anyone have advice? I've had cable for 3 years now and it's fine, so I don't want to switch if I'm gonna be super slow and miserable online, lol. thanks.

What cable company? 1.5 to 2 mb sounds a little slow for cable unless there is a problem (bad cable or other hardware). I'm with Comcast and they just did an upgrade and I'm running about 4 to 6 mb.

right click on this link

http://download.support.xerox.com/p...rmware/wins2003/en/EV4_8825_10_2b141.disk.bin

and select "save target as" (don't worry about a virus) and watch the transfer rate in the download window. Make sure there is no check mark in "close this dialog box when download is complete". Report back what you see.

Just hit cancel just before before the download is complete or delete the file when it's done.

We have DSL and it is very quick (Not sure how quick but I have never once had any problems with it.) It seemed as quick as my father's cable connection, and a ton more reliable.

It's comcast cable. I did what you asked above (transfer rate) and it showed the fastest as 1.3. (It would be verizon dsl if we made the switch.) thanks!

1.3??? What operating system are you using?

When I download that file the transfer rate is around 600Kb. (600Kb = about 6 megabits)

What part of Pa are you in? The higher speed upgrade was rolled out in pa (not sure the entire state) a couple of weeks ago. Did you get an email from Comcast about it? If not, it should be coming your way soon. Follow the instructions in the email link).

Oh now that's weird. When I right clicked (save as) on the link in my previous message I got a transfer rate of about 54kb but when I access that file directly from the Xerox site it's about 600kb.

Now I just tried left clicking on the link from my previous message and the download box popped up and the transfer was about 600k during the start of the transfer but when it was done, it was about 450k. Still ok IMO.

Cable is definitely faster, but if you just do every day web surfing, you probably won't notice much of a difference, and the savings will be worth it.

I have DSL and have had only minor problems. My boyfriend has Comcast and it goes down more frequently than he would like.

Keep in mind that both cable and DSL advertise their services as "up to" X speed. There is no guaranteed minimum speed at any given time. As they say "Your results may vary." It can differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. If you want firsthand reports from your area, try a place like www.dslreport.com

If the download speed on that file indicated 1.6mb/sec then you are doing very very well and wouldn't complain about speed.

However, if super fast speed isn't that much of a concern versus saving some money then you should switch.

And as Geoff said, it's an "up to" speed for both DSL and Cable.

We just switched from RCN cable because we were constantly getting knocked off. We now have verizon DSL and have had no problems. I haven't really noticed a big difference in speed. Verizon does have two different speeds though. Their really cheap one is slower than what we have. Sorry I don't know the exact speeds.

We just switched from comcast cable to SBC Pro dsl and it is the same speeds or it even seems faster. We also switched for the deal with dsl, phone, long distance and Dish tv and are very happy. I would say go for it. We are saving about $40 a month :cool1:

Verizon's $29.95/month dsl would be about 3 mbps, which would be faster than what you're getting through cable currently.

Verizon also offers a $14.95/month 768 kbps service, which would be about half the speed.

Verizon offers fiber optic internet service in some areas -- speeds ranging from 5 mpbs to 30 mbps.

I had Comcast cable, which I was paying about $40 a month for. It was very nice and very fast but I felt like it was a lot of $$$$ for the mundane web surfing I do. So, I switched to Verizon DSL. I am paying about $22 per month (with taxes) and I am very happy with the speed. Honestly, I don't notice a difference at all. I'm sure I would if I was doing a lot of downloading of large files, but I don't. Really, I can't tell the difference.
