cabins for disabilities

Hello!

We are RVers but this Christmas we are having a family Christmas trip and we have reserved the cabins.

My mom had unexpected brain surgery 2 weeks ago for a non malignant tumor. Doctor believes she should have no problem going to Disney but of course we are playing it by ear. We are really hoping we can go because it will be special after all she has gone through.

I have been reading about the GAC etc....

That made me think about the cabins! I am pretty sure they have cabins for handicap right? We would like to be next to each other so would it put us in a handicap too? Or would that cause us to be split up? We will have two cabins between our group.

It would really help if mom had some handlebars and stuff like that. We are not sure how much if any steps might wear her out. So a ramp would be nice. We are taking a wheel chair to cut down on the long walks.

Any thoughts on the cabins? has anyone stayed in a handicap one? Should I call and put this on our reservation?

Yes, you need to call reservations back and request an accessible cabin. As far as both of you being together, I "think" there are several accessible cabins in some of the loops and they are together.

BUT, there is not a loop of ONLY accessible cabins, so ideally your mother's cabin could be accessible and yours right next to it could be a regular cabin.

I don't know what the bathroom differences are in the accessible cabins, but there is a wheelchair ramp to the porch on the accessible cabins. I believe they are also very close to the internal bus stops.

We have stayed in an accessible cabin a couple of times. There is a special line they will transfer you to in order to block the cabin due to medical necessity. When you call, make sure you specify if you need a roll in shower. We have stayed in both kinds. The one that has a bathtub has hand rails...both types have wheelchair ramps to the deck.

I will call and put it on our reservation. One thing you don't want after brain surgery is a fall in the bathtub! So I think it would be wise.

Best wishes to you and your party, especially your mother. It's incredible what the surgeons can do these days. Replace a knee and walk the next day. Have brain surgery and go to WDW a couple weeks later. Amazing.
