How hard is it to rent a cabana at the Grand Floridian? We are going in August and I want to surprise my family with this... we only have one day we can make it work and I will make sure I'm on the phone for it as soon as it opens, but is this near impossible to get?

Agreed. If you call right at 7AMET (I'm pretty sure it's 7AM, calling the WDW-PLAY line) 60 days before your GF reservation starts, you'll have your best chances - especially if your day is a couple days into your stay and can reserve it 60+2 or 60+3. Good luck!
Interesting, I'm glad I posted this bc I didn't realize it was a 60+ like dining, I thought it was 60 from the day you wanted it! It's only 60+1 unfortunately!

That one day might be the difference! And since you mention VGF above, don't forget to ask for your DVC discount (sorry if you already know that!).

I’ve always been told you can only get the DVC discount if you book through member services. Their phones open an hour or two later I believe. That said the AP discount is the same as the DVC discount and the WDW-PLAY line can book using the AP discount .

I've had success getting the discount applied directlythrough the PLAY line. I've also had CMs on the PLAY line who didn't know how to apply it and told me to request a discount/refund with the cabana host, which we've done successfully, too. I've never used MS for a reservation, so I don't know what they can do for me. When we tell the host we're DVC, they get the discount applied to our room account. Maybe I'll have to try the AP discount approach (also have that)....!

So once again the answer reverts to it depends on what CM you get!!!!

Although great to know the host can apply the discount on the day of!

In rough numbers, I'd say 1/3rd of the time it's discounted when we book and 2/3rd we get it applied at the cabana. Once it's applied at the cabana, it goes quickly towards our lunch! And yes, it depends on the experience and knowledge level of the CM who answers the call to make the reservation. It clearly can be done when booking, but not all know how to do it. Maybe I'd have better luck with an AP discount!
