Dh and I love the CA Grill. We've eaten there on every trip. It is a great resturant that I love! Interesting thing happened when my friend made the PS arrangements - they were told to dress business casual.....um okay. This has never happened before. DH and I usually got in nice jeans and nice shirts - but have never gone business casual before. Is this new? Is it now a requirement - cause if so we are going to cancel the PS.

When last we went (Feb 2004), Cal Grill was identified as Dressy Casual, which Disney defines as follows: "Collared shirt prefered for gentlemen. No tank tops, t-shirts, cut offs or jeans."

Not sure how that differs from "Business Casual," but it does seem that they prefer that you not wear jeans (however, if you have dressed that way in the past, you may want to call the restaurant directly to make sure what is permitted).

That's really interesting. There is another active thread right now that mentions, among other things, things that the CG is doing to cut down on the stagnant and bottlenecking situation caused by people lingering to watch the fireworks.

I've never heard any disney restaurant other than V&A be this specific about requiring a certain level of dress. Maybe this is related to what's being discussed in the other thread.

Of the many times we've made PS for CG, we've never been told anything special about dress. And while it traditionally is a little more dress up than other WDW restaurants, we've often seen people dressed in standard-issue theme park dress (shorts t-shirts), baseball caps, jeans, etc.

I called a little over a week ago to make our PS, and was also told something like Dressy Casual. I don't remember the exact wording, but they definitely have a dress code.

The Broadway at the Top dinner show, which was where CG is today, requested coat & tie for gentlemen, and evening/cocktail dresses for women. Also, coat & tie was required at the Empress Room on the Empress Lilly.

Apparently, they are trying to limit the Fireworks bottleneck by going back to slightly more formal attire.

Ahh -- just goes to show you that there are "DIS Veterans" and then there are the true Disney Veterans. Nice piece of trivia. This was before my time.

We ate at California Grill in February and we were told the same thing (business casual) when I made the PS. They didn't explain specifics, so we just wore what we had worn to the parks that day (since we were going there straight from the MK) and we were not out of place at all.

We'e never been told business casual. Our last dinner there was last month. When did your friend make the PS, Amanda? Business casual around here means a jacket for guys I think.....that would be a big change!

Smart casual is a term that has been used as well as resort casual. If you ask what is meant you will be told no swimwear and no tank tops (really trying to address men in tank tops I believe).

What they have is a dress"suggestion" not a code. Absent a tank top or a swim suit, you can still get in the CG.
And besides--how people dress in no way reflects how they act--or how long they'll sit at a table sipping coffee waiting on the fireworks!! Having a strict dress code won't do a thing to help with the problem(s) they have.

The last time I made a PS there the CM told me that the only thing they <i>really</i> didn't want was a sleeveless shirt on a guy! (Sorry, fellows - no muscle shirts!)

She just made the PS a few days ago.

i made my ps's a few weeks ago. cm told me for california grill and flying fish there is a dress code and he called it "business casual". i will go in jeans and a nice t-shirt and dh will go in jeans and a polo....just as we go to work. i'm sure we will be fine.

OK, everyone...what is business casual in your part of the country ....or world for that matter. I'm going to have to ask my husband and older son, but I think in the Chicago area that means a jacket for men but no tie. Certainly not jeans....that I'm sure of. Again for our area. I know the left coast is more casual while the East is more formal than we are.

If DD is telling people business casual, won't that deter people who try to abide by dress codes?

You're right-different parts of the country may well have different ideas of "business casual". Down here, it means jeans-at DH's company, all employees, from the plant manager down to the floor sweeper, wear jeans every day. It's so hot here (in the eighties today), no one would ever wear a coat-and a tie-forget that too!

My TA made my PS for me for California Grill for early December.
The note said "smart casual, no shorts.

I just called and made a PS at Artist Point. As Shoes99 said, the wording they use is "smart casual". The CM rambled off a list including "No" bathing suits (duh), cover-ups, flip-flops, tank tops, etc. There was no mention of jeans. We always were nicer than theme park clothes, because we enjoy having an opportunity to dress for dinner, and get some good pictures. If you prefer your jeans, they obviously don't have a problem with that. Hope this helps. :wave2:

Sorry, I thought that I was told the same thing when calling for CG. At least that sounded familiar, when she said it. Maybe not, since I can't remember yesterday! It may also depend on the CM. Who knows?

In NY business casual is no jacket or tie necessary. No jeans or T's. Khakis and polos are fine but nothing more casual than that.

Just was there this past Sunday.

It would appear the majority of the crowd was Khakis and a Collared shirt however, I did notice a number of folks wearing blue jeans. I don't think that there will be a problem unless you show up in a sleeveless shirt and your speedo.

Cheers,

Schuey
