Bye-bye Captain EO? 'Tomorrowland' is moving in

Ah, so that's why when I went to make FP+ for EP it said Fastpass distribution had ended that day for Captain EO! Used to only seeing that for A&E! Not EO! Can't wait to see the preview!

I dunno; Disney's really big on name recognition as a marketing tool. I wouldn't put it past them to count on using a recognizeable word like "Tomorrowland" just to get people into the theater.

Going in August and my family will happily walk past EO, wave at all the people in line, and not think twice. Saw it when it first debuted and didn't like it then....

I surprised myself by having mixed feelings about this. OTWH I'm doing the happy dance that they're retiring this attraction. OTOH I'm not very happy at the thought that Disney has decided to use this spot in Epcot just as another place for relentless self promotion. Isn't that what the spot in DHS is now dedicated to? If this is just a temporary placeholder for a new and engaging attraction, I'm OK with it. But the pessimistic voice in my ear is whispering that Disney is probably cheaping out again.
My thoughts exactly.
Captain EO is horrible. Some people like it, and I'm fine with that.
But why would anyone consider a movie preview as a reason to visit Epcot?

Hopefully, EO will be shipped off to "infinity, and beyond!".

By the way...anyone else think is was a stupid idea for Disney to use the iconic term "Tomorrowland" for a movie that has absolutely nothing to do with anything at its Theme Parks? Surely there are any number of other names that they could have chosen for this project. Sort of like giving a movie the title "The Jungle Cruise" only to find out that it is a romantic comedy about two people who live in Des Moines.

But herein lies the problem. Tomorrowland isn't a "concept". It is a tangible thing that exists in several Theme Parks. This movie is not about those Theme Park Lands. I think the original title would have made more sense.

Why can't you just accept it has absolutely nothing to do with WDW Tomorrowland? :scratchin

I'm stubborn. I still maintain that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are based on the theme park attraction, despite the movies not being about the ride at all.

Ummmm. It is obvious that this movie is going to have a strong connection to Disney's Tomorrowland. That is the whole point of the name! Just like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise (In the works) and now Tomorrowland. Obviously there is a big difference between a ride/area and a movie. They take elements of the ride and put them in the movie. This is what they did with POTC. The jail dog scene and many others items found on the ride were incorporated in the movie. Same thing with HM. Tomorrowland the movie will have a number of references to Tomorroland in the theme parks.

Disney is shooting for the POTC effect: The ride inspired the movie which inspired the ride. People love the movie because of the ride and people visit the ride because of the movie. The connection was so successful they changed the ride a little to match the movies. I get a great ride and a fun group of movies. Disney makes Billions of dollars and gets park advertising.

If successful expect a franchise of Tomorrowland movies and then changes to the parks to incorporate some items from the movies. In fact this could result in an update to TL! But only if it is a hit like POTC.

You know, I'd like to see them do a NEW Captain EO movie, possibly animated, or get another musician to replace MJ (Bruno Mars?) and do a sequel/reboot or what have you. Disney owns Lucasfilm now, so they could do a modern version with cutting edge technology. They might need to spruce up the "4-D" aspect too because there's hardly anything special about 3-D movies anymore. Could be cool!
I really enjoyed the original when it was released in the 80s. I have seen it twice now as an adult, so I'm good. I think a Bruno Mars re-imagine would be amazing. He is enjoyed across a few generations and could come up with something really spectacular if they would put money behind it.

Well is the trailer at least 3-D? Honestly, I loved the "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" movie that was there but I was excited when it was announced that Captain EO was returning...then I saw it again. Wow, it definitely did not age well. Never again! I wish they would do something new, but if not at least bring back HISTK. Maybe a combination of a live action and 3-D show, something like the Universal Terminator show, but maybe an Avatar theme? ( Yes, I said the "A" word. LOL) I also liked Alien Encounter, and thought the pre show was excellent.

The only good thing about Captain EO - anyone at that attraction can't also be in line for Soarin' or Test Track. :upsidedow

This is how I feel too. I honestly have never seen the show, nor will I, because of his reputation. While I do admit that he was a superstar in the music world, after all the allegations around him, I just cannot imagine a theme park franchise that is all about children and families could use his name and reputation. Then again, I have still never seen the movie Powder, because of the history of the director with child abuse. I just think it's wrong for a studio like Disney to pretend like none of this ever happened or is important.

Have you not seen allegations against Walt too? Until someone is convicted anyone can say anythjng about anyone especially if they have money.

What a silly reason to not see something especially since he was never convicted

Without addressing the allegations or voicing my opinions about him, and I do agree with you about anyone can say something about somebody nor was he convicted, I personally don't find it a silly reason for someone not to see it (Captain EO). It's their conviction and that is fine. You and I may not agree; however, their choice their decision. Some would call me silly because I have my own personal reasons beyond product quality why I don't purchase products such as Nike and Apple as an example.

Ha-I was kidding.

It's intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer.

I can find no mention anywhere that the film will be released to theaters in 3D.

So, unless someone can find that info, I'd assume that the trailer will be 2D.

I'd rather see them bring back making memories and magic journeys. Ah, the good old days!

So lets see...
1. Body wars pavilion is empty
2. Odyssey building is empty
3. Closing innoventions
4. Putting a commercial into a very nice theater
5. Energy is on life support...mostly used as air conditioned nap ride

BUT

adding a 3rd theater to a popular attraction (which i'm not against, but come on do something with all these big empty spaces)

I don't really like when Disney does these previews. I'm really excited about the movie, but I'm not going to take time out of my expensive theme park day to watch the first 15 minutes of a movie that I'm going to watch anyway. I'd prefer captain eo ( I'm one of those weirdos that likes it, it's a love of 70s/80s sci fi and hooter is hilarious). If not captain eo, then just put something new in. At least then Disney would have something new to put on the Epcot pamphlet/map, instead of a test track reimagining or a soarin screen addition.

Yea I wish the whole thing could become WS. Seas could be Austrailia with Great B Reef, TT some kind of Autobahn country, Soarin a movie for whatever country etc. Could add about 6 easy. SE can stay since it's all the countries. MS can stay for possible "future" worlds/countries. Ellen can stay as the "origin" of earth/countries. Seeds can stay to feed the world. L King can stay to save the world.

To my knowledge, there were never any sex abuse accusations against Walt Disney himself. A couple employees over the years, yes. And yes, some fundamentalists have tried to cry that sorcery, sex etc... are "hidden" in the movies, but that's not even remotely the same as someone having SEVERAL complaints of sexual abuse brought against you. Also, the legal end of the 1993 scandal was that there was reasonable proof, and MJ's camp copped a deal which made the case quietly disappear. Funny how often the guilty rich are able to make things disappear. Not as often that innocent people do it though.

But hey, if the sex abuse allegations weren't enough, how about child endangerment? Or did you forget about that time when MJ went a little berserko (okay, okay, to be fair, he's lost his mind so many times it's hard to keep them all straight) and put a blanket over his newborn baby's face (suffocation anyone?) and then dangled him over the edge of a balcony several stories up??

Sure. There's innocent until proven guilty. And then there's just common sense.

But regardless, it's certainly not a silly reason for someone to avoid something, when there is VERY high probability that that person was a child molester, who was a drug abuser and endangered his own child. And whether you agree with their decision or not - it's not your call on whether it's silly or not.
