We just got back from 6 nights in Orlando -- 3 at Portofino Bay Hotel and 3 at our home, BWV. The Portofino hotel is lovely and we enjoyed our time there (the parks were a different story). While we loved the hotel, but we found we really missed our "home". By most hotel standards, our room was roomy - but can't compare to a 1 bedroom villa. We'd forgotten what a challenge daily maid service can be. Seemed housekeeping was always there when we were, and were not there when we were gone. We returned to the room one day at 4 to find the room had not been cleaned.

We checked in at BW on Sunday morning around 9:30, knowing we would have to store our bags. In prior visits, we've found the BW staff to be a bit distant - they always got the job done, but always a bit removed and sometimes frazzeled. We seldom heard "welcome home" (that part was never a big deal to us) Things have changed.

We were greeted by the guard with welcome home -- twice. Both valets and bell hops welcomed us home and offered directions on where to store our bags if the room wasn't ready.

The CM at the front desk greeted us with a warm smile and a hearty welcome home. Our room requests were for a standard room, non smoking (medical) and top floor. No way did we expect our room to be ready. CM was tapping away at the keyboard, looks up and says "I see we've upgraded you to preferred view at no additional points... and your room is ready". Off we went to our room, 2102.

We were a bit surprised when we entered the room and found someone steam cleaning the carpeting - and he was certainly surprised to see us!! He started apologizing, but we said no problem, just let us leave our luggage in the kitchen, we'll be off and you can finish. We returned a few hours later to check out the room. We were a bit nervous because of the carpet cleaning, but the room was in excellent condition and very clean - overlooked community hall. Not sure why a standard room wasn't availble, but maybe it was changed to meet our non smoking medical request.

Throughout the four days, everyone was wonderful. Parks were very busy, but all cm's there were very helpful.

So after all is said and done .... there's no place like "home"

How wonderful for you! With all the posts on the boards about folks who are afraid to "walk on contaminated carpets" and use the blankets on the beds, walking into a steam-cleaning would have THRILLED me! Isn't it great when everything goes your way?

Friends who know how often we go to Orlando keep nagging us about going to Universal, and the truth is I have NO desire... Went years ago and it was a big disappointment. We have annual passes with Mickey and shelling out all that money for a day at Universal just doesn'tappeal to me. Maybe when the kids are teenagers... Meanwhile, I am happy to settle in at WDW. Glad you had a good trip! :flower:

Thanks for the report and glad you were so happy with BWV. Makes me all the homesick and wanting to August to be here - except I don't want to wish away my summer in Maine!

Kathleena: After the winter we had here in Maine...we certainly do not want to wish our summer away :flower: . We deserve a great one since so far spring has been such a wash up!!! :sunny:

Colleen, you're right -- we were very happy to see the carpet being cleaned. Our maintenace fee dollars at work!! There was just a little bit of "gee, were they just doing a routine cleaning, or was there a problem".

Our children are grown and gone, but if we had older ones (10-11+), we might have had a different reaction to Universal. That said, we did love Spiderman!!

I'm glad to hear you had such a great experience. I'll be going home for 3 nights at SSR for the first time and 2 nights at BWV on Monday and I can't wait. Though the range of service can very, I've never had a 'bad' experience going home yet, and am thrilled to hear you had such a great one!

I wonder if this represents an overall change in BWV attitude or just a chance occurence.

I would recommend Universal if you like loud noise and lots of it. It's not for me either.

We've stayed at BWV twice now (2003 & 2004) and found the CM's there to be extremely friendly and outgoing. Got "welcome homes" several times each trip.

I think CM attitudes are just a hit and miss thing, seeing as they are human and subject to the same moods and stresses as anyone else. But I've never found the staff at BWV to be noticeably "removed". YMMV.

scootert...I agree completely with your assessment of Portifino Bay. It really is a lovely resort, but in the end a hotel room is a hotel room and won't compare to a DVC villa.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and impressions. :)

I agree.

We've always found the BW CM's very nice. In fact, back in 2003, DH and I were traveling with my mom and my brother, who was on leave from the Navy. We had CM Steve at check-in and he was amazing-- just full of pixie dust! Very cheery and he went out of his way to find us the perfect room. When my brother sent his Navy uniform to the laundry for cleaning, we received a nice surprise. The CM's laid his freshly cleaned and pressed uniform on his bed with red, white, and blue balloons tied to the hanger and a signed photo from Mickey thanking him for his sevice. Brought us all to tears :goodvibes
