If we were not DVC members, we would never have been in Orlando to fulfill our dream of seeing a space shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center. It took staying up all night 2 nights in a row but it happened! I was busy recording video and so the only photos I have are what my DH took with my iPhone (which has a not-so-good camera). We didn't want to be so involved with capturing the moment that we couldn't be fully "present" for the moment. Yesterday the launch was scrubbed at T-9 minutes. Today's launch was touch and go to the last minute because of clouds at Kennedy and also at the emergency abort sites overseas, so the anxiety lasted until the last seconds. Here are a couple of less than great photos from my iPhone (fortunately my video is better). Wish that they could convey our delight and awe:

Pre-launch (so you can tell how dark it was):

I am so glad you were able to see one! I know you mentioned this might be your last chance, so hooray that you were able to enjoy it!!! :goodvibes

Yeah! I'm so happy for you and your DH!!!

Bobbi:yay:

I'm so happy you got to see the shuttle launch! DH and I saw one in 1990. We are going back to WDW in July with the kids to hopefully see Endeavours last launch. We will arrive the day before the launch and stay for a week hoping that it will launch during that time.

I remember you were hoping to do this-good for you guys.

OH I am so happy for you. I know how wonderful those are to see. We were down there last March and they kept canceling the launch and we forgot about it. Then one night we wander back to MK to use a fast pass and was heading to SM and saw a group of people standing around staring at the ski and realized what it was...it was the only night time launch and I can not tell you how amazing that sight was even miles away it took you breath away. So am am soooo excited for you to have seen this. Pretty soon no more tho.:confused3

This was supposedly the last night time launch before the shuttle program ends, so we were desperate to see it. We have tried numerous times to plan a DVC visit around a launch and the launches were always postponed. So you can imagine how happy we are! :goodvibes

When we were there too it was posponed like 3 or 4 times so we gave up keeping track of it. then this happened by accident. We were so excited we didn't even get a picture. We met someone the next day on the bus and said that being farther away was a better view??? I don't know I had only seen one but it was truly amazing. I don't think you will ever forget that..how wonderful.:yay::yay::yay:

How wonderful for you!! I hope we can see a launch someday. Neat pictures! :)

Congratulations! And a night launch to boot!

DH and I took 3 times to see our shuttle launch. Know the feeling of excitement and fulfillment.

That's terrific! I had the same thing in May having always wanted to see a launch. If we hadn't had DVC I don't think it would have happened. I'd love to have seen a night time launch and I was just down in FL but had already left DH home long enough so I didn't stretch out the stay any longer. I'm still happily thrilled to have seen one in my life! :dance3:

Doesn't Kat take the best pictures!:goodvibes

Sorry, I digress.....

OP, I got involved in your last thread a while back when you missed the launch. I am so glad that you got to see this one!:cool1:

Awesome!! So very happy for you! You got to see the very last night launch too, according to what I've read. Hoping to make it down for the March liftoff....

so, when will the video of the launch be ready for us all to watch??:goodvibes:lmao:

Congratulations, what a wonderful opportunity! I know DH would someday love to experience this as well (and I'll be more than happy to accompany him!) Thanks for sharing.:goodvibes

I'm so glad you had this experience!! DS(then 10) and I experienced a night launch in '99 (first female commander, Eileen Collins) and it was an amazing experience for us. He had attended Space Camp for four years in a row - my little astronaut wanna-be:goodvibes. That launch took three tries and we enjoyed the excitement of each evening that we spent waiting. The airline fees to extend our stay and the additional hotel nights were the challenge;). We still say it was the most amazing man-made phenomenon we have ever seen.:thumbsup2
Thanks for the pictures and the memories!! Awesome!:thumbsup2

Hi Jean,

Thats great I would have love to been there as well to see a nighttime launch of the shuttle. I am sure DH was really excited about seeing the shuttle launch and nighttime would be a plus.

Jim.

:cool1:great pics, im so jealous! Have been planning trips for years trying to catch a shuttle w/o success (did get to see a rocket launch from jetty park). Someday we'll get lucky, delays happen; safety 1st:thumbsup2

Don't wait too long to try again! The final shuttle launch is scheduled for Sept 16th of this year.

im not clear on how the new 'private' mangement space system is going to work out, yet hoping for the next best thing. By then, i'll be retired & be able to hang out if i miss a launch.
