BWI, YC, or BC?

This is probably more of a true "family relations" question than a resorts question, but at this point, I can use all the help I can get. Here's the situation:

We're looking at a family trip over Thanksgiving 2006. Will be all adults:

Me and DH -- veterans
MIL and Step-FIL -- both in their mid-50's
BIL (DH's bro) and SIL (his wife) -- early 30's
SIL (DH's sis) and her BF -- early 20's

Here's the problem: MIL is VERY picky and fancies herself quite the sophisticate. Her only trip to WDW, she stayed in GF (two weeks after it opened).

Since we know we'll spend most of our time in the worldshowcase, the EPCOT resorts make the most sense. I've only stayed in the Dolphin, but have walked through the other resorts to get a feel for them. While I love the Yacht club, I think MIL would find it too "stuffy." So, I'm trying to decide whether BWI or BC would be better (given her GF tendencies). Or, option 3 is to say "stick it" and pick Yacht Club which is the one I'm really interested in.

I should also mention that no one has offered to help me plan this little adventure, but MIL wil surely complain if not happy. Rock and hard place.

What would you guys do?

I think YC resembles GF the most. If she didn't find GF stuffy, she'll be just find at YC.

Based on the make-up of your crew, I would suggest BWI. Any of your team will enjoy the daily and nightly ambience of the Boardwalk. There are shops, ESPN for any and all games, and entertainment. Yes, that's easily accessible from either the YC/BC, but it does offer the "right there" feeling. You're a little bit closer (walking) to MGM and nothing is better than the short walk to Epcot.

BTW....for the record, I have never stayed at the Boardwalk but have been at the BC more than 30 times. How's that for an objective opinion?

BC is my favorite resort. That being said, for your particular situation, I'd recommend BWI. Being that everyone in your crew is adult, it would be extremely convenient to have the boardwalk entertainment right at your fingertips. Yacht Club is a close 2nd. If your MIL likes GF, I think she'd like Yacht Club. I wasn't sure how she'd feel about the main pool at YC/BC though.

I would think any of those would be fine. We like YC last time we had the last room bottom floor water view, furthest from the lobby but closest to the BW. Have stayed at YC 2x. I don't think you can go wrong. MIL will probably find something wrong with what ever you do. Have a great trip, plan it the way you want to.

Personally, I wouldn't touch that decision. As all the Epcot resorts are within a short walk of each other, why doesn't each group pick where they'd be most comfortable and make their own resort reservations? It's not too bad trying to plan a flexible itinerary, with some meals together, but lodging is a different story. I'd buy MIL the Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World and let her read through it before making her choice.

It seems you are putting a good deal of thought into planning this trip. I was in a similar situation, planning a cruise for DH's family all with different preferences. Do as much planning as you can while remaining sane. All 3 places are great.

Good luck with planning. Once you are on the trip, relax and have a great time! This is also your vacation!

Ultimately, you cannot make anyone have a good or bad time. Do what you can before, then enjoy the time you have!!

I think BWI would be a great choice. YC is a close 2nd. If money isn't an issue, have your in-laws reserve a Garden Suite at the BWI. They are beautiful and have their own picket fences..... Since your MIL is picky, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the YC. I found it to be extremely clean and well kept throughout our stay. They were completing a lot of renovation work, so everything seemed brand new.

While the main pool at YC/BC is often crowded and noisy, we found the quiet pool to be quite pleasant. We were usually the only ones down there and quite a few times DH and I had the hot tub entirely to ourselves.

We also liked the dining choices around the entire area and were very pleased with room service.

Mousekeeping was excellent throughout our stay.

All of these resorts you are considering are very beautiful and are in comfortable walking distance to Epcot and the Boardwalk for entertainment. Many posters have their favorites, I've only stayed at the BWI, but have visited each of them through the years. I'd see which one has the best offer for your needs and go with that. You can't go wrong. Enjoy your vacation!

I would choose YC. If your MIL is very picky I would think she wouldn't like BWI not having there own restaurant/room service. While it's close to alot of restaurants and is a beautiful resort it still doesn't have the usual "in-hotel" amenities that YC/BC have. YC is very crisp and clean looking and I'd think she would prefer that. The quiet pool area would be both beautiful and a little quieter or more serene than any other area.

It's soooo true. Thanks for all the advice. I would love to stay at any of the three and everyone makes their individual favorites sound all that more enticing.

Ultimately, I think I'm going to put my computer to use, make some mini "brochures" on each of the three resorts and bring them with at Christmas. Maybe we can reach consensus when we're all physically in the same state.

I've stayed at all three places, and my vote is for BWI, followed by YC at a very close second.

As others have said, the nightlife and activity of the Boardwalk would appeal to all of your travelers. The absense of room-service could be a real issue for the MIL, I didn't realize there was no room service. Why not do what we did, stay Concierge? MIL should love that! Be warned though; Concierge rooms are kind of a hike from elevators.

The YC certainly would be very appealing to MIL as well. It is very clubby and adult-feeling to me, and very quiet when we were there (although our room at BWI was suprisingly quiet as well - even though we were right over Seaside Sweets).

The service is excellent at both. You really can't go wrong with either one.

I feel for you, I have planned multi-family trips to WDW as well, and I was also the only one doing the planning. The thing that burned me the most is that we chose the dates of our trip to accomodate one person's schedule, and the hotel to accomodate this same person's budget, and they ended up cancelling at the last minute!!! Grrrrr....

After that, I've vowed to never to try to make others happy again by travelling according to their preferences (except my mom, because you know - she's my mom). You can't make everybody happy, but you can make sure you are happy - that way you know SOMEONE will be happy!

Seriously, others are welcome to join us on trips, but if I'm expected to make the plans, then I am the one making the decisions.

Stay at BWI. Very sophisticated and lovely. I agree as well -- if money is no object have MIL book at garden suite. She'll be enchanted with the suite and the surrounding rose garden!
