One of my close friends just had a brain surgery for a tumor. Her head was shaved and part of her skull was removed. The piece of skull will be put back in sometime in the future if stays clean or if it doesn't she will have titaninum put in. Right now my friend is in hospital she is doing well she will have to wear a helmet when she is out of bed and around she says she feels very ugly with how her head looks. Her mom said that the doctors said that she can wear wig in a couple of months once things heal more. I want to buy my friend a wig my friend was in her second year of law school and she had to withdraw a couple of months ago when she was diagonsed and she been through a lot. Right now she has trouble speaking and her left side is weak. I really want to do something nice. Has anyone in a similar situation purchased a wig?

My daughter was diagnosed with lymphoma in September. She is now in remission but she has lost all her hair. Call the American Cancer Society in your area. They can provide you with local stores to purchase great wigs. My daughter's look great. In my area, they had wigs available for free. My daughter has three. She only wears them once in a while because she feels more comfortable in a bandana or hat.

In my daughter's case she was freaked out when she first lost her hair. She wore the wigs for 1 week but she felt like they were fake. They looked beautiful, on one knew it was not her hair because they matched her haircolor and style so well. She looks beautiful with the wig, bandana or bald head to me. It was a shock to my DD at first. She is now comfortable and is waiting for the hair to grow back.

I work for a major medical center, and FWIW, I am NOT a patient care provider at all. But, our facility has a specific shop to help out with things like wigs for patients with hair loss due to various medical reasons. Maybe the hospital your friend is at will have a similar type of resource???

Good luck. Your friend is lucky to have such a caring friend.

Yeah, the cancer ward of the hospital or the ACS will have info.

Personally, it was a waste for me. It was good for the first week after losing my hair, but that was it. They're itchy and sweaty and hot. It can get hard when you're in public and it starts itching and sweating beneath!

I'm a breast cancer survivor and I found very reasonably priced wigs at the American Cancer Society's website www.tlcdirect.org. Be sure to check out the clearance section they usually have a good selection. They also have a lot of cute comfy hats.

For what it's worth though, I hardly wore my wigs. I thought I would wear them all the time, but I just went naked headed most of the time...much more comfortable. I went thru chemo in the winter and found a couple of very soft fleece hats at Walmart that were very comfy and inexpensive.

You didn't mention if her tumor was malignant or not, but if it is cancer then should would also qualify for a neat program offered by the American Cancer Society. It is called Look Good, Feel Better. It is a FREE program set up for cancer patients/survivors. You meet with a group of ladies for a few hours and a coordinator shows you how to put on makeup/wigs/scarves to make yourself look better, etc...It's just kind of a fun thing to do and I know I felt so much better being made up. They also give you an awesome makeup kit that is donated by various makeup manufacturers.

Best wishes to your friend. You sound like a wonderful friend for her to have.

My aunt had cancer and died I was really little when it happened and my mom said she liked the wigs but hated how they made her itch. My friend has stubble on her head and she keeps saying she feels ugly. I think wearing a wig under her helmet might make her feel uncomfortable.

It wasn't malignant. Maybe there are organizations that have programs for people recovering from brain surgery.

Update. I took my friend to a shop and we were able to find a wig that looked good on her despite the dent in her head. She won't be able really wear it for another month. She will wear around the house when she doesn't need to wear a helmet.
