Buying Used Washer and Dryer

Our son at college has a house with a few other guys and they are wanting to buy a washer and dryer through the want ads/craigslist.
When they go pick it up, should they start them to see if they work or just pay and take?
Any other advice is appreciated.

They should start them and see if they work if they are hooked up.

If they are not hooked up, they should get something in writing from the seller that they are in working order on the receipt from the sale.

Make sure that the receipt has a date, name, address, phone number and price with a note claiming that the washer and dryer are in working order.

*buying from craigslist is "buyer beware".

I should also let you know, that I have bought a dishwasher, stove and microwave off of craigslist and have been very please.

I have bought both washer and dryer off Craig's list. Never tested them and never had a problem

We bought used on craiglist as I don't like to wash my dh's work clothes in the washer we use for ours. I must say is it the best fifty bucks we've ever spent. Two years later it still runs like a dream.

My DS and DDIL bought a washer dryer off Craigs List though a guy that buys used ones and repairs them. He gave them a one year warranty which will expire in a month. He also delivered them. This is his business. They have had zero problems with the set. Always look for someone who is obviously running a business and who offers a warranty.

Huh...

I just sold my dryer on craigslist. Got a new steam dryer so sold the still working perfectly "old" dryer for 100 bucks. Cash. Never even thought to give a receipt, & wasn't asked for one. DH had put it in the garage so there was no way for the buyer to turn it on, either...
