In the process of figuring out what insurace we NEED.. We have travel insurance as we are coming over from europe anyways... We are now looking into trip cancellation and interruption...
Just curious if DCL cancels a trip what happens.. Any Irma people out there who can comment. I believe three sailings were cancelled did you get a full refund for the DCL portion? Also can they change dates too?

We are booked on Sept3rd... but can they postpone a day or two.. which doesnt make sense as I checked their schedules and this impacts next cruises as they turn around in one day...
thanks

Ok thanks. so for the actual cruise costs they refund.. then we just need insurance for the land portion and if WE cancel due to illness etc...

DCL will refund the actual cruise costs if they cancel, or pro-rate refunds if a cruise is cut short. HOWEVER... that is only after DCL makes such an announcement. You are coming a very long distance; I don't know how that would factor into your decision to travel or cancel. If you are coming early (with pre-cruise plans at the parks or elsewhere), you may very well need to travel before DCL makes any announcements. Be sure to have trip interruption coverage in that situation to cover expenses during the time you would have been on the ship, or "cancel for any reason" coverage if you might decide traveling is too risky and need to cancel pre-cruise plans before DCL makes any announcement. DCL will not refund if you cancel first.

Enjoy your cruise!

Our September 9th Fantasy sailing was canceled due to Irma. We were notified on a Tuesday, about 4 days before our sailing. From the time of the notification, the 100% refund was back to my credit card in about 2 weeks. We were given a 25% off coupon for a future sailing, which we were also able to pair with the Florida resident discount. We sail out this Saturday.

thanks for the info! We are planning a week WDW before the cruise and two day afters.. so trip interruption should cover that portion after WDW IF a cruise gets cancelled.. As I work for an airline we just need the ground covered.

Sounds almost like a win win with the 25%.... though at the time it probably wasnt

and if WE cancel due to illness etc...

You’ll want to get the pre existing condition waiver then. If anyone has pre existing conditions. Like I have asthma, so if I came down with pneumonia and needed to cancel but didn’t have that as part of my insurance, the insurance would see if the asthma had anything to do with the complications of pneumonia.

Yes. That was where many issues hit during the storms. The “the evil cruiseline ‘made me fly into a storm’” complaints”.

Only if it worked out for people. There were some without insurance etc who had a hard time bc they were in the area but without a cruise OR a way home easily. What Disney did for them didn’t feel adequate. To them.

Yay for good trip insurance!

The storm, of course, was not a blessing, but the way it played out certainly was. I live in Tampa, and at the time the storm track had it headed straight for us. So clearly I wouldn't have felt comfortable leaving my home for a week with no idea what was going to happen. Add to that, I work for a local media outlet, so I went from having vacation days to having to work mandatory 12 hour shifts. Had they not canceled, I might have had to eat the cost of the cruise (since I had no trip insurance).

Now, we still get to cruise, and we got an amazing deal. 7 night cruise for 2 adults and 2 kids with a balcony for $3500 :-) About 800 cheaper than our original planned cruise

One option (though expensive)is cancel for any reason. That gives more flexibility but add quite a bit of cost to insurance.

After cruise cancellation announcement, DCL credited the cruise but the land transport (air, rental car, hotel) and in your case WDW tickets would not be covered. Travel insurance providers (not via the cruise line insurance) will cover all pre paid, non refundable costs that you cover (ie, trip costs). We planned incrementally after purchasing the Disney Cruise and were able to keep adding trip coverages to our plan with GENERALI Travel Insurance (used to be CSA). We added air tickets because of course that is non refundable months after we bought the cruise. The closer to departure you buy insurance, the less expensive it becomes.

I saw more of the second - the "I was in the area before they made a decision and I had no back-up funding, so the evil cruise line ABANDONED me in an evacuation zone!" complaints.

Hello, did you have trip insurance? I plan to buy insurance, but not through Disney and I was curious if Disney canceled would they do the same for me?

The things offered were offered to all.

Insurance would have kicked in, depending on actual coverage, to cover hotels required when you traveled in early then couldn’t leave, etc.

In a way, insurance is useless when cruise lines themselves cancel, for the cruise fare. But it’s for the stuff around the cancelled trip that trip insurance is valuable.
