Thinking about getting a 1 day ticket for my brother in case it all goes screwy, I know I'd have to put it in his name when ordering. My question is, if he doesn't want it and I end up using it myself, would I have to reassign the ticket to me on the site? How would I do that?

No problem at all.

Unused tickets can be transferred.

yes, it's pretty simple, but you can always call the MDE help line and they can do it for you.

Thanks for the responses

Just out of curiosity with a sudden thought here, and I already have my tickets, but if you had a friend who owned DVC, could they buy tickets for you using their DVC discount? Or wouldn't something like that work?

DVC members only get a discount on Annual Passes and they can only get a discount for themselves and family members living at the same address.

Can't you buy a ticket over the phone without designating a person to assign it to? When I bought my party ticket by phone it did not show up automatically on my MDE.
