For a wedding I was thinking about buying the bride's China platter directly from Lenox.com (much cheaper and free shipping) and not from her Macy's registry. How does that work? Do I call the store and ask them to take it off? I wonder how it will be packaged.

Do you think it's a good idea? Macy's the platter is $186 on sale for $148. Lenox is $111 plus free s&h.

I would. I just bought my cousin a place setting somewhere other then Macy's where she was registered.

I've used the registry before to make my gift selection, but not necessarily purchase it at the store where the registry is. I've even been able to buy more sometimes, by shopping elsewhere and getting the exact same item for less $. ;) Lenox is Lenox no matter where you buy it. ::yes:: I would just go into the store at a later date and tell them that you purchased this item and need to have it removed from the registry. You don't have to tell them that you bought it elsewhere. :ssst: I think most store cashiers are not even going to ask if you bought it there. For that kind of price difference, I would definitely buy it directly from Lenox. :thumbsup2 Good Luck w/ you decision.

I've bought things "off registries" before because they were cheaper. All you have to do is call the registry place directly (mine was off of Target and they have a dedicated line to their registry department) and gave them their registry number and told them I bought item #1234 and if they could please remove one/two. Within 15 minutes it was updated on their site. HTH!!!

I don't think it's a big deal even if you don't get around to taking it off their registry. If they get the same thing from someone else- they can return the second one to the store they have their registry at, and get something else.
It would be nice, yes, but if something happens and you aren't able to do it, I wouldn't stress about it.

I've noticed that some people shopping off a registry don't always realize what has already been bought, so often there are duplicates, no matter what you do.

We almost always buy a registry item elsewhere to save money. If the couple gets extra, they can always return one. No biggie.

Even buying at the store doesn't guarantee anything. At our wedding, we got 5 crockpots. Amazingly, 4 of them were bought at the registry store and just happened to be purchased on the same day so the registry wasn't updated until the end of the day after they were all purchased.

Put me down as a "no big deal" person, too. I've always viewed registries as insight into a couple's needs and tastes, not dictation on precisely what or where something must be purchased.

I've done this a couple of times. Just call the store where the registry is and tell them you bought X but forgot to have it taken off the registry.

Yeah, for my nephew's wedding I just knew I could get things cheaper at CVS. They registered for Sour Patch Kids and Pamprin (among other really goofy things)

Yes. It's true. But apparently my nephew held the scanner while his fiance went to the restroom and he just had fun scanning! :sad2:

No, I did not actually buy those things! :scared1:

At some stores, the bride is the only one who can update the registry. She can tell the store to remove it if she gets it from someplace else. It's not a big deal, lots of brides register at more then one store so they have to do this anyway. (For example if the bride and groom are from different cities)

This so sounds like something my husband would have done if left unsupervised with the scanner.

"Uh, honey, why did your Aunt Madge buy us cotton balls and a zippo lighter refill kit? I mean, they're lovely and all, but..."

- or-

"Sweetheart, please don't forget to thank your cousin Zoey for the lovely six pack of Pounce cat treats. Oh! And the his and hers hairnets!"

Yeah, that totally could've been me!

I just bought some china from Bed, Bath & Beyond for a wedding gift. Much cheaper than the store they registered for it at, and I had a 20% off coupon!

When I got married, back in the dark ages, I loved having all the store credit to use after making returns of duplicate items.

It allowed us to make purchases for our home for at least a year or two.

I wouldn't worry about having it removed from the registry -- if there is a duplicate, the bride can simply return one for something they want/need.

Thanks - I'm off to lenox.com then. What a deal!!

When my second cousin got married, we bought her stuff at a discount kitchen store, and were able to call Fortunoff's and get it taken off.

You should have no problem getting them to mark it off. In my opinion I say it's pretty inconsiderate to buy something from a registry and not have it marked off. Yes, it can be a problem to return things without the receipt. Some stores, Target included, limit how many items someone can return from their registry. I think if you can take the time to look up their registry and find it some where cheaper, than you can also take the time to make sure what you bought gets marked off. It's also nice for other people so they can pick something else off the list. IMO it's more fun to get most of the things off your list than to get multiples of one thing and have to return them all and buy the other things.....

I did it. I bought it at Lenox then called Macy's and they took it off of the registry. So easy and I saved a bundle!! Thanks!
