Buying Pins for Pin Trading on Ebay!

I may have a minority opinion around here, but as a long-time pin trader, if you're buying pins just to trade, I wouldn't worry about it. You won't be able to tell the difference, the CMs trading with you don't care, and it's all just for fun. Now, if you're buying to collect -- seriously collect, and not just to look back and reminisce -- you might have to be more careful. The only pins you don't want are the plastic pins and one that are marked "Sedesma" on the back. You might have trouble trading those at the parks. I personally wouldn't buy pins from someone on ebay that doesn't post a picture of the exact pins you'll buy (usually called "grab bag" pins), because then you have no idea. But I buy and sell pins on ebay for my personal use (nothing listed right now -- got kind of burned out on posting and not having them purchased), and always post a picture and only buy if I can see exactly the pins I'm getting. When you trade a pin, the CMs don't really look at it and decide if they can take it -- they don't own the pins they're trading, and they're not trading for their own personal collection.

We are not serious collectors-- just for fun with an 8 year old and probably her 2 year old little sister (because she'll see Sissy doing it...)

sounds like ebay might be a viable option after all.

thanks for the tips!

There's a HUGE topic on fake ebay pins around here someplace. I think it's on the collectibles board, but it can be very eye opening to the scammers out there.

And look to spend 2$ or so a pin, when you start looking at 50 cent pins, you're looking for fakes.

Pretty much all my purchases on ebay are for pins. I look for clear pictures of the actual pin. And because I've been around them for so long, and I usually have seen the pin before, I know what colors look "off". Feedback ratings don't bother me much, but higher the feedback, you're more likely to pay a little bit extra for it. People would rather outbid each other on a high rating seller than go with a lower rating which might not have any bids.

And don't buy mass lots. They might take a close up picture of the 2 or 3 real pins, and stick you with 5 or so fakes.
