buying new COAT - nice but not pricey?

Price doesn't seem to make a difference!

Is it possible to get a GOOD, nice quality women's coat that isn't too pricey?

Looking for a long-ish style made of good fabric, that won't *pill* after the first month or so.

My last few coats have done just that after paying way too at department stores (Dillards).

So how do you know you're getting a quality fabric? Is there a good fabric *equation*, ie wool & something else?

I bought a long, gray, 65% wool coat from New York & Co last year. I don't remember what I paid, but I know I got it during a good sale. It is still in great shape. The only problem I've had is that the metal buttons were eating through the thread. So, I resewed the buttons with dental floss and I've had no more problems.

We got DD a coat at Burlington. It is brown suede with fur inside, very stylish, it was $100.00. It is long and has a hood and machine washable.

Seems to me, these days, that there are four choices:

1) Stylish but not durable - but still expensive.
2) Not stylish but durable - but still expensive.
3) Not stylish and not durable - but inexpensive.
4) Stylish and durable - but insanely expensive.



I'll be interested in seeing the brand names and retailers (please!), for coats that fall into that elusive fifth category, of stylish, durable, and only normally (not insanely) expensive.

I have an Anne Klein wool that I've had for years and it has minimal pilling. It cost me under $200. The only repair it's needed is to tighten up the buttons which I did myself last weekend.

Now for sub zero days, I have the $500 North Face parka. But unless it's under 15 degrees the wool coat is my go to all winter.

I have a wool coat by Jones of NY I bought at a macy's sale back in 2001. I'm now just looking for a replacement (lining is starting to rip). It didn't pill much at all and only thing that needed to be done was having the buttons tightened ever couple of years. I haven't bought anything else that is Jones NY in a long time so I don't know if their quality is still the same, but I loved getting ten years out of a coat!

Do Lands End or LL Bean make a style you like? I believe both companies will replace or refund your money for any reason for any amount of time as long as you keep the receipt!

I have a peacoat that is St John's Bay from JC Penney- this is the 5th year I have had it, and the 3rd winter that I am using it constantly, and it is in great shape. I get it dry cleaned once or twice a year. I did have to resew all the buttons on tighter right when I got it, but for the hundred or so dollars I paid for it, I am pleased. This coat has been through hell and back and still looks new after being cleaned.

depends on what you're looking for: warmth or style?

Wool is the standard material most good quality pea-coats are made out of, and it will always pill.

Other materials to think of are leather & suede (neither of which are very warm)

I have a down jacket that I got from GAP that is not only stylish but very warm. (wind resistant)

I really like Hillary Radley coats.

They are NOT cheap, but I am. So I buy them at the end of the season with coupons and discounts or at places like Marshall's/ Nordstrom Rack (even better if I can find them there on clearance).

I never pay more than $150, have paid as little as $25. I also sell the ones I no long want at a resale shop, I never get less than $100. Keep in mind, I tend to buy traditional yet stylish coats in non-trendy colors--so the resale shop is always able to get top dollar.

At the moment I have two--a short and a long--one is black, the other gray. They are both well made, stylish, and very warm. To keep up with the latest trends, I accessorize with "fun" scarves and hats.

OP here. Thanks for the replies.

So I checked my coats, some of which show no wear, and some that look battered. All quite expensive, all name brand, and mostly from Dillards, and not very old.

All have some percentage of wool; the ones with the most wool, wore the worst ???

The coat thats a combination wool and mohair is the best. Second best is a cheaper coat from Old Navy! (to the knee dress coat)

So there must be a variety of wool qualities? IOW just like anything, some wool is better than others?

I have a Calvin Klein wool coat its full length that I got at Macy's last year there isn't a bit of pilling on it. I got 75% off. Most coats will be going on sale soon so I would wait for a great sale and get something with quality.

I can't imagine wearing the same coast for 10 years as someone just mentioned. Yikes I would be so bored with it. I like to be fashionable and one rule of thumb is to have a really good coat. When its cold think of how many people see that coat, not what is worn under it.

I love my Dennis Basso coat I got from QVC. It's several years old and I still get compliments on it - mine is faux fur and so warm and soft. Love it.

I just love one I found at TJ Maxx. I would think wool or cotton wouldn't pill; I think it is man made fibers that do that, but not sure. It is probably a really great time to be looking. They are trying to make room for spring things.

PS Have seen some fantastic looking coats at Target too, but haven't bought one so can't comment on the quality.

Look for London Fog Outlet stores!! London Fog has great Coats!! And they have great prices at the Outlet stores!! No wool, No pilling!!

Also Columbia Makes excellent cold weather coats that last and last without a pill and without an ounce of wool!! My Columbia coat won't die....

My best ever coat I bought at Sea World for $35.!! It is Wind proof, Water proof, and Lined with fleece. It works in all types of weather, and It works really well in rain!! it is a short coat.

I have a wool blend that I boght at Burlington Coat Factory 23 years ago. I've had the lining repaired twice but there is no pilling and the coat looks as good as new. I believe I paid $89 for it.
