My friend met a new guy this past Sunday. The first day they met, he bought her a $275 pair of jeans. He has since invited her to Spain, Africa, and Napa.

Does this seem insane to anyone else? Or do people really live like that? I met and dated my husband the old-fashioned way...one dinner and a movie at a time! A big splurge for us is buying new end tables!! :rotfl2:

Wow, I'd NEVER let someone I just met buy me $275 jeans...$150 MAYBE! No, just kidding. Seriously, she isn't going away with him yet is she?

First name, last name, address...and how much he's worth just for the heck of it. ;)

Jeez, I wish I could find a guy like that! My last boyfriend was constantly bumming money off of me so it'd be nice to be spoiled like that for a change :teeth:

Okay, but seriously...doesn't this strike anyone as a little odd? It would make me very uncomfortable! That's just TOO MUCH (in my opinion). Or am I just a big ole' fuddy-duddy??? :confused3

I've purchased love three times in my life. All three times it came wrapped in a 15 pound bundle of fur pluto:

Does he have an uncle?

Not your typical date, but what the heck, I'm game!

I can't say that it would make me uncomfortable. If he's well off I would completely be okay with it actually. But then again, I have been told I am slightly shallow :rolleyes1

:teeth:

Ok, this is going to make some of us girls look bad-but if he wanted to spend that much for a pair of jeans for me-I would let him. Ok, maybe not on the first day but maybe they had instant chemistry? I dunno, but a lot of people would allow it. As for going away-maybe later-take me shopping some more.
:)

And if I had a bad past with guys, like they treated me bad and I always seemed to attract the losers-then I might be so inclined to let a guy papmer and spoil me.

All kidding aside, yes it is odd. I thought it was weird that my dbf bought me a DVD player for my birthday after we had only been dating for a month. I would have had a heart attack if I had received $275 jeans and such other extravagant gifts.

My friend's sister broke up with her boyfriend and he won her back with a $30,000 car...so sadly, love can be bought sometimes.

No kidding, right!? Who wouldn't love to be whisked away to exotic locations and given luxurious clothing!?!?

Anyway -- to the OP -- this sounds unsavory to me! Next thing you'll tell us is that he has a zillion dollar life insurance policy on her where he's the benefactor!

Did they meet in a mall? :confused3 How does a man buy a woman a pair of jeans the first time they meet?

Seems strange to me...

sounds like alot of fun. who even said anything about love? perhaps your friends just wants to hang out with a rich guy for a while.....If I were single - and I somewhat liked the guy - I'd do it in a heartbeat (heck I've done it before; but not internationally).

Okay, okay...I'll lighten up! :teeth:

My DH doesn't think it's strange either...so maybe I'm just a little over-protective and too cautious... ;)

why does this sound like the begining of one of those "dateline" episodes that ends with the guy running up gazzillions in debt on "new girlfriend's" credit cards to start wooing the next next one? and then when all is said and done you find out every new girlfriend/wife was initialy bankrolled by the money scammed from the last one.

i dunno-i'de feel odd being given a surprise gift worth that much so early in dating, but to participate in the purchase (i mean she had to be there to try them on so she knew the price from the get go) sounds like both parties were in agreement with it.

You know, I had the exact same thought! I've heard things like this happening. The guy is de-frauding an ex-girlfriend or wife, or is in some other way stealing the money, or is running up debt of his own to try to impress women (and everyone else in their lives). Sometimes these guys have even more sinister motives.

Now, this guy could totally be on the up-and-up and is just well off and very generous with his money. But I'd advise the girlfriend to carefully check him out and ask a lot of questions. If she is really serious about this guy, she can even have a background check or private investigation done on him.
