We are interested in buying DVC points and we'd like to know if there's any benefits in buying direct from Disney or buying used. We live in Quebec, Canada and DVC said that they can't give us any infos unless we go there.

Does Disney give you any discount if you pay cash?

Thanks

Here's a very recent thread on buying direct from Disney vs the resale market.

Disney Direct vs Resale

No discounts for cash purchases from Disney.

Keep asking questions, and good luck with your decision process! :)

Thank you Granny,
Do you know how much they sell per points? It's really hard for us in Quebec to get all the infos we need to make our decision...

:confused3

JulieQC, just keep poking around on the DIS and ask questions. You will find that this site will be your best resource for any and all info.

Resales for sell for less....cost depends on which resort. Through Disney the only benefit would be the speed at which you get your points, but at a higher cost. No discounts for cash........

What would be the best home resort to buy? regardless the price per point..

i'm guessing BCV is the most popular overall. probably has the best pool and a great location near epcot/mgm. it's also relatively small and can be difficult to get without the 11 month advantage. it expires sooner than AKV, SSR and an extended OKW, though - which might make a difference if you're pretty young.

if you like animals and/or africa, AKV would be the "best."

if you like being able to walk to DTD and park close to your room, you might think SSR is the "best."

if you like eating at artist point and being close to MK, the "best" is VWL...

Except the fact that you can book up to 11 months ahead, is there any other advantage for the home resort? Should be buy cheaper points (ie 66$pp Hilton Head vs 95$ for Beach club) and use them at AKV?

The best advice I can give is to buy where you want to stay.

If you specifically want to stay mostly at AKV then you should buy there. The booking advantage can be extremely important if you have dates that you definitely need, or want to travel at the busier DVC times including holidays.

if you can't book prior to the 7 month window, there is no advantage for the home resort: "points are points."

as DVC continues to grow, you do run the risk that many of the other DVC owners (HHI and VB as well as OKW and SSR) will be competing for rooms at the 7 month window and availability might not be there at any given resort, and particularly the smaller resorts.

there are also slightly higher risks at HHI and VB, for things such as hurricane damage, that may drive MFs higher than those for resorts at wdw...so you also need to balance the extra MFs against the price per point savings.

Thank you for all the infos given. We will continue to look around the DIS for all the other information we need. As I said before, it is hard for us in Quebec to find all the infos we need.

:tink:

Thanks again !!

good luck in your quest, lots of info on this site:thumbsup2

We bought "used";) (you'll find the term resale utilized here:) ) thru the site sponsor.

Able to purchase smallish resale for cash & added on @ another resort for 11 month window privledges.

Still waiting for #3 resort so we can bank/borrow points to be able to have 1 or 2 stays each year.

Or am I incorrect? I was told you could only deduct the interest if you purchased directly through disney.

I'm Canadian too (from Vancouver, BC) and read a lot of the threads here to get all the information I needed to decide if DVC was a good choice for my family. After I said "yes" to that question, I ran the numbers to make sure it was a wise financial decision (and said "yes" to that too). The search tool was really great for helping me find older threads that contained a huge amount of information on everything. The hardest decision in the end, was where my home resort would be. I did pick BCV, but not because I think it is THE best... just that it is the best for me, as I think my girls would love the pool there (location is great) and I might not be able to book there at the 7 month window. The other resorts all have something very special about them, and you will see that many people on these boards can't just pick ONE resort -- they love them all!

It is hard to pick a resort when you haven't stayed there. I personally didn't want to wait until my next trip, to check things out as I want to get the benefits out of my points as soon as possible! I relied on a lot of photos to get a sense of what appealed to my taste, and also balanced the price of points and maintenance fees over time.

Good luck with your search!

In the U.S. you can deduct it if it is a loan on a primary or secondary home (including a timeshare) that is secured by the home (i.e. its a mortgage). DVC financing meets this requirement - so does using a home equity loan.

Consult your own tax advisor since the law here is a little complicated and if you have other things going on (like more than one home already) this may not apply to you.

We have completely relied on this DVC forum and Robert from Timeshare to answer our questions. We live in Calgary and cannot receive info either. We are going to DL next month to get some info and buying in April. It is a serious long term purchase. We took 4 days off work in April and are flying almost three thousand miles without our kids to stay onsite on rented points so we can make a sound and informed decision. It is frustrating to not be able to gather the needed info from Disney (for legal reasons) but you will find this forum extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
